  • Column: When TikTok ended up making a mess for me

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jan 29, 2025

TikTok has been in the news a lot over the past few days. There is even an editorial cartoon about it on this page. To be honest, I have the app on my phone, but only so I can watch a video sent by one of our kids or my sisters. I haven’t lost any sleep over the app possibly being banned, but I have a 17-year-old in the house who probably would be a bit irritated. However, I do have a story about TikTok. It focuses on the bane of my existence over the past few weeks. In mid-2023, I saved a story about lawmakers in the Treasure State c...

  • Column: Bolognese in a very loud crockpot

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jan 22, 2025

A few times a year, we will have family travel to Montana to visit us. While changing my set-in-stone weekly routine is always a bit stressful, I’m always happy to have people come and stay. Along with some wild conversations and a few drinks, food is always a key puzzle piece in ensuring they have a good stay. We always try to take them to some of our favorite local restaurants, and I also spend a crazy amount of time in the kitchen preparing something I hope will be remembered until the next visit. When my son visited a few weeks ago, I w...

I’m not sure if this is common for most people, but when I’m warm at night, I tend to have some pretty vivid and often unwelcome dreams. There is always a constant inner dialogue during the winter months, trying to decide if I want to be a little cold in bed when the temperatures are reaching single digits or if I want to be a little warmer and chance having some wild dream that will put me in a funk the first few hours after waking up. When I decide to stay a bit warmer through the night, my dreams often take me back to the time I’d most...

While I’m not quite sure I would describe it as a “set in stone” resolution at the end of 2024, I did want to make sure that I would at least make a valiant effort in the New Year to stop getting so frustrated all the time with my surroundings, especially when I am traveling or out and about in public. It’s been a few years since I considered making a resolution, mainly because they never seemed to last long. In fact, I was lucky if they lasted until St. Patrick’s Day. With my eye on not getting so frustrated, I was put to the test very earl...
