  • Our View: Be prepared to take care of pets

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Dec 23, 2020

In a Facebook post last week, the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office shared a seasonal reminder that had a very important message. The message detailed how pets are not toys and to not give a puppy and kitten as a gift unless prepared to take care of them for years. The message went on to discuss the challenges that both puppies and kittens and to remember to think about the long-term commitment of pets. This is such a necessary reminder, especially this time of the year. This is also something that is very personal to me with two rescue k...

  • Column: Hood Wars

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Dec 23, 2020

I’m sure I probably sound like a cranky neighbor yelling at people to stay off my lawn who also walked nine miles through a mountain pass to get to school, but kids are just not outside very much anymore. It’s kind of sad because a lot of them are really missing out on all sorts of shenanigans while they aren’t tied to some sort of screen all day. In fact, this is probably true for adults too. During the summer as a kid, I was out the door early and would not come home until with the exception of eating until the streetlights came on and somet...

  • Column: Philly 'Wit' Cheese

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Dec 16, 2020

The City of Philadelphia is rich in history and perhaps and is perhaps as important or more in the creation of the United States as anywhere else. While Philadelphia does have the nickname of the "city of brotherly love", it has also garnered a reputation for having some not so friendly residents. A perfect example of this is witnessed in professional sports where fans have been known to boo just about everyone from the opposing team to their own team and they once in 1968 pelted Santa Claus wit...

  • Our View: Please shop local this holiday season

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Nov 25, 2020

It would be an understatement to say 2020 has been rough for so many small-town businesses in Montana. I’ll readily admit it has been tough trying to navigate through the closures, mandates, growing cases, and uncertainty. The next few weeks are going to be so pivotal for so many small businesses and this is the time for local residents to stand up and lend a helping hand. Shopping local on “Black Friday” and Small Business Saturday is always a big deal, but even more so this year. There are certain bells and whistles that come at a big box sto...

  • OUR VIEW: Slow down for emergency personnel

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Nov 18, 2020

In late October, two tow truck drivers were killed on the scene of an accident on Interstate 90. This was a very tragic accident and one that should send a loud and clear message to those who are driving by tow truck drivers and emergency personnel – SLOW DOWN. There is absolutely no reason to get driving past an accident at a high rate of speed, yet it happens all the time. In fact, a lot of times this happens is when the accident they are reporting to was caused by bad road conditions. It is downright scary that somebody thinks it is not o...

  • Column: Fake troubles...

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Nov 18, 2020

It was the middle of the night and here I found myself in the high desert of Wyoming with my headlines on trying to navigate through a never-ending sea of sagebrush. While I certainly wasn’t hiding a body as I see on so many of the true-crime shows I endlessly watch, my intentions were not good at all. But let’s go back a little bit first. My first year of college was a blast, perhaps too much fun. How I managed to pass everything I will never know. I was having so much fun that I really didn’t want to come home where I would have to get a job...

  • Our View: Please slow it down

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Oct 28, 2020

Without trying to sound too much like Lord Eddard Stark on "Game of Thrones", winter is coming in southwest Montana and its pending arrival has already brought the return of nasty roads to the Treasure State. Last weekend morning served as a preview of what is to come as many parts of Interstate 90 and local highways turned into in icy and snowy mess, especially over bridges. And it is still October. This is always the time of year that it is important to remember to slow down and drive...
