  • Column: Peaches, Bella, and the intruder

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 13, 2019

I had written a column about bullying for this week but decided at the last moment to not run it. It was perhaps a bit too aggressive and I'm sure it would have ruffled some feathers, so I decided to go with something a little more lighthearted. Some of my favorite times writing are about stories from the past and this is a real gem. This is the story of a cat and a dog. While it certainly has some of those random chaotic moments that seem to happen to me far too often and may show some good in...

He was exactly right. The Lady Wolves came out strong in their elimination game Friday picking up a 61-40 win over Harlem. Three Forks was once again...

A middle school science project helped the City of Three Forks find out their water system had violated the Arsenic drinking water standard. At last week’s Council Meeting, Council member Teri Whitesitt said she received a text from Melissa Johnson who said her daughter Erica performed water testing as middle school science fair project and found high levels of arsenic in the school’s drinking fountains. Mayor Steve Hamilton told the governing body the arsenic levels from the fountains were substantially high, and as soon as the city lea...

  • COLUMN: Storm People

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 6, 2019

When a severe winter storm hit recently, I didn't think it would stick around for nearly a week. I'm over the freezing cold, horrible roads, snow everywhere, crappy drivers and everything else that has to do with winter. For the first time I really understand snow birding and how all the local residents must really be enjoying the warmer temperatures while the rest of us adjust the pillows in our igloos. While I own a 4-wheel drive vehicle, it has a problem with the battery, so we have had to...

  • OUR VIEW: Student involvement says a lot

    Jack H. Smith, Voice Editor|Feb 27, 2019

At a Three Forks School board meeting last week, I heard an amazing statistic from High School Principal Justin Helvik. He told board members that 89 percent of the students at the school are involved with some type of activity. This level of involvement by kids in Three Forks is incredible and something everyone involved with the school and community should be very proud of. I'm a firm believer that when a student is involved in some sort of activity that they become better students and...

  • Column: Bleacher Butt

    Jack H. Smith, Voice Editor|Feb 27, 2019

When I first started in journalism, I always thought a dream job would be a major movie critic. Several times a week I'd be able to watch movies and then would get the opportunity to write about them. I don't watch nearly as many movies as I used to, I've kind of transitioned to binge watching television shows, but at a time I would spend multiple hours a week watching a wide variety of cinema. I think for a year or two I was going to try and work my way into a position where I could be a movie...

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Feb 20, 2019

The Three Forks School Board of Trustees will vote next month on an action item that would close the three schools to out of district students. The proposed action would not affect out-of-district students who are currently enrolled. Superintendent Jeff Elliot told board members Tuesday night the topic is something they need to address. He said they are going to need to start taking care of their own and recommend closing the district until further notice. Elliot feels that while his principals do a good job of addressing this issue, this...

  • Column: Social Media

    Jack H. Smith, Voice Editor|Feb 20, 2019

I'm a little bit ashamed of how much time I spend a day on social media. I cannot imagine how productive I would be without it, but it does connect me with friends and family from afar, and is also useful for work, so it does have value. It also drives me crazy when I see the same things over and over and have recently been thinking about the type of posts I see on a day-to-day basis and figured I'd share this information in a column. These are certainly not trying to bash on anyone, in fact I...
