  • Column: My Dad saved the princess before I did

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|May 3, 2023

It has been nearly impossible the past month to turn on the television and not see a commercial for the “Super Mario Brothers” movie. While I had zero interest in seeing the film, it brought back a rush of memories of a childhood spent hours playing on the Nintendo Entertainment System. I’ve talked a lot about spending countless hours in my youth navigating trails on my bike and staying outside in the summer until the streetlights came on. There was plenty of time outdoors, but once I received an NES, my time outside dissipated. A few of my fr... Full story

  • Tester discusses Family Farm and Small Business Exemption Act

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|May 3, 2023

In an effort to make sure Montana farm families and small business owners aren't paying higher costs to send their children to college, U.S. Senator Jon Tester and colleagues from both sides of the aisle introduced the Family Farm and Small Business Exemption Act. In a rural press call last week, Tester said as a farmer, he can say that one fit size policies don't work for Montana's rural communities, and that's why he introduced a bill that will make sure Montana farmers and ranchers don't... Full story

  • Column: It's about time to mow the lawn

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Apr 26, 2023

It’s just about time to do the first mow of the season, and I have mixed feelings about it. In fact, it would be safe to say I have a love/hate relationship with my mower. One of the most significant issues with the first mow of the year is the amount of poop I have in my yard. I don’t own a dog, but my neighbor’s dog uses my front and back yard as its own private toilet. I wouldn’t mind as much as I do if the dog wasn’t a jerk, but he’s about one step away from Cujo. I have many other animal droppings in the yard, along with Fido next door. I... Full story

  • Column: Uh oh, the leftovers spent a few days in the car

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Apr 19, 2023

On the very first day of my very first job at Wendy’s, I had to slice a bucket full of onions, and it took weeks for the smell to go away. I can remember washing my hands with bleach at one point to try and remedy the situation, but it did not help. As I was dealing with my smelly predicament, I also was operating the grill during the lunch shift, which always made me smell like a hamburger after my shift. When it was a busy Friday, I probably cooked hundreds of burgers, and the smell followed me into the car and home. I would always have to s... Full story

  • Column: Were they really studying for a test?

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Apr 12, 2023

Commuting to work is not a fun ordeal. While it may allow for some time to think or jam out to music, it’s a major hassle because of sharing the road with people who cannot function properly behind the wheel. Over the years, I’ve had up to a 120-mile round trip, which was depressing. It seemed to zap my free time away. Luckily, I don’t have to be on the Interstate as much, but it is still enough to make me shake my head or curse under my breath repeatedly. On a recent trip, I was sitting shotgun and decided to get a closer look while passi... Full story

  • Column: Plenty of fun at the Alta

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Apr 5, 2023

I could probably fill a Stephen King-length book with the stupid things I’ve done, and I’m sure I will generate enough foolishness to generate a sequel. The only saving grace is that there was usually a lesson learned, and it often makes for a super interesting story. I was lucky growing up and went on some fantastic vacations. I have fond memories of trips to San Diego and Los Angeles. I’m sure planning was much more complicated in those days, and I’m 99 percent certain we got a little help from a travel agent. And that was a good thing b... Full story
