    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Apr 19, 2023

Last week, the Three Forks City Council unanimously voted to apply for a $3 million loan with 2.5 percent interest from the State Revolving Fund. The municipality would use the money as part of a Flood Mitigation Project to create a conveyance channel and culvert crossing mitigation option designed to capture overflow flooding from the Jefferson River before reaching the City of Three Forks. The city will use the SRF funding for the Special Improvement District (SID) created in October 2022 and to purchase easements needed for the project.... Full story

  • Column: Uh oh, the leftovers spent a few days in the car

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Apr 19, 2023

On the very first day of my very first job at Wendy’s, I had to slice a bucket full of onions, and it took weeks for the smell to go away. I can remember washing my hands with bleach at one point to try and remedy the situation, but it did not help. As I was dealing with my smelly predicament, I also was operating the grill during the lunch shift, which always made me smell like a hamburger after my shift. When it was a busy Friday, I probably cooked hundreds of burgers, and the smell followed me into the car and home. I would always have to s... Full story

  • Column: Were they really studying for a test?

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Apr 12, 2023

Commuting to work is not a fun ordeal. While it may allow for some time to think or jam out to music, it’s a major hassle because of sharing the road with people who cannot function properly behind the wheel. Over the years, I’ve had up to a 120-mile round trip, which was depressing. It seemed to zap my free time away. Luckily, I don’t have to be on the Interstate as much, but it is still enough to make me shake my head or curse under my breath repeatedly. On a recent trip, I was sitting shotgun and decided to get a closer look while passi... Full story

  • Column: Plenty of fun at the Alta

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Apr 5, 2023

I could probably fill a Stephen King-length book with the stupid things I’ve done, and I’m sure I will generate enough foolishness to generate a sequel. The only saving grace is that there was usually a lesson learned, and it often makes for a super interesting story. I was lucky growing up and went on some fantastic vacations. I have fond memories of trips to San Diego and Los Angeles. I’m sure planning was much more complicated in those days, and I’m 99 percent certain we got a little help from a travel agent. And that was a good thing b... Full story

Head Coach Clay Feliciano said with the first game in program history, jitters were expected, and they talked to the team between games, and the players had a great attitude. Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 29, 2023

U.S. Senator Jon Tester met with officials in Three Forks last week to learn more about the City's Flood Mitigation Project. Tester said it is smart of the municipality to be moving forward with the project that includes a recently adopted Special Improvement District. So, I applaud those efforts," Tester said. In October 2022, the City... Full story

  • Column: Just like riding a bike

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 29, 2023

The expression “it’s just like riding a bike” is prevalent when someone is reintroduced to something once a constant. It’s been so long since I have been on a bike that I’m unsure if the saying would ring true, and I would probably fall off my first one to 20 attempts. It has probably been about 30 years since I took a bike ride, and it is certainly not something I am proud of, and I should do something about it. I’m not quite sure what happened, but there was a time when I was on my bike just about every day, weather permitting. Growing up... Full story

  • Column: No beef with a four-day week

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 22, 2023

While there certainly are some hassles about being self-employed, there are also many rewarding things. One of my favorite things about having a home office is unless I’m out covering an event or doing an in-person interview, I can wear whatever I want. There is something comforting about writing a story or editing photos in sweatpants and a t-shirt. Based on watching this year’s NCAA Basketball tournament, college coaches are also fine wearing the equivalent of pajamas while they work. While I do enjoy the mini office in my bedroom, I som... Full story
