  • Column: The Happy Meal is on the Roof

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jan 18, 2023

There is an infamous scene from the television show "Breaking Bad" where the main character tosses a pizza on the roof of his home in a fit of rage. As bizarre as that may sound, it seemed completely normal to me. While it wasn't a pizza, I had once done something similar, which seemed pretty appropriate at the time. I am ten years older than my sister Megan, and I often had to watch her during the summer months. We would usually get along, but she also displays a stubborn side, and when this... Full story

  • Three Forks hosting Columbus on January 20

In non-conference action last week, the Three Forks High School Boys' Basketball team lost 51-41 on January 10 at East Helena and 66-47 on January 14 at home against Manhattan Christian. "We had two tough opponents this past weekend. I thought we played really well, especially on the defensive side of the ball. We didn't capitalize in either game. We missed way too many opportunities at the line versus East Helena that could have put us in a position to win the game," said Head Coach Terry... Full story

  • Center Offers Tips for 'Avalanche Terrain'

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jan 11, 2023

While many Three Forks residents and others throughout southwest Montana enjoy getting outside to recreate during the winter, they should be mindful of increased avalanche dangers due to an above-average snowpack with weak layers. The dangers of the 2022-23 season were quickly brought to the attention of Treasure State residents when a fatal avalanche claimed the life of a snowmobiler on December 31 north of Cooke City. A large avalanche was also reported on January 6 at Saddle Peak. Based out o... Full story

  • Column: In bed by 10 on New Year's Eve

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jan 11, 2023

I’m sure many people festively celebrated the New Year when the clock struck midnight, officially making it 2023. I was not one of them. In fact, I was in bed at about 10 p.m. I wasn’t a huge fan of 2022, so I did not want to celebrate anything about it, even the end. I was pleasantly surprised not to be shaken out of bed by several hours of fireworks, it was much quieter than I was used to, and I was not complaining. I had been invited by friends to ring in the new year with them in Helena, but I wasn’t up to traveling. Although it was only... Full story

With the average number of 24 MDT snowplows hit by vehicles a year, already eight this winter, officials started to look at ways to make plows more visible and continue to operate and keep drivers safe. According to Walt Kerttula, Equipment Bureau Chief in the MDT Maintenance Division, the background behind the new lights started with looking at o... Full story

  • Our View: Looking towards a great 2023

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jan 4, 2023

Looking back on 2022, there were plenty of great moments for the Three Forks community, and there should be plenty of more exciting news in 2023. One of the most important news items of 2022 was the continued work on the Three Forks Flood Mitigation Project. City officials have worked tirelessly to get this project off the ground, and hopefully, at the start of the year, there will be some positive news and the awarding of a FEMA grant that is integral to future plans. 2023 should also see another outstanding year for local businesses.... Full story

  • Column: Get me a cherry pie, I'll time you

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jan 4, 2023

When I was a little kid, I sat down to eat a cup of tapioca pudding when someone told me it was made with fish eggs. From that moment on, I was horrified by the dish, and it took me about 30 years before I tried it again and realized it did not involve seafood. Unfortunately, I still cannot enjoy tapioca because I’m afraid I’m eating caviar pudding. Looking back, I was told many things growing up that took me a while to figure out were not true. One of the ones that always stuck with me was swallowing gum. Every time I purchased gum as a chi... Full story

  • Column: Maybe a bit to cold to cook outside

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Dec 21, 2022

I’m not sure why I thought cooking ribs outside in December was a splendid idea, but it did not stop me from battling the below-zero temperatures for a nice home-cooked meal. It was probably about the third time I spritzed the ribs that I really questioned my decisions. I’m not much of a New Year’s Resolution type, but maybe in 2023, I will refrain from putting on the apron and standing outside like an idiot as my beard freezes. When the weather finally returned to the 30s later in the month, I decided to try the pellet grill with a recip... Full story

  • Column: Feeling cute, might wear pajamas to dinner

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Dec 14, 2022

Some of the best memories of my childhood were from the weeks leading up to Christmas. Of course, I was more than excited to see what Santa had left on Christmas morning, but I also counted down the days to come together with my family. I have so many cherished memories of Christmas Eve at my grandparent’s house and the truly magical combination of my aunt Nancy’s lasagna to go with a prime rib prepared by Ben’s Foodliner. I still remember the smell of the exciting food combination from the kitchen as I waited by the massive front room window f... Full story
