  • Column: A March Madness Road Trip

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 15, 2023

I’m an avid sports fan, and my absolute favorite time of the year is the NCAA Basketball Tournament, especially the first four days. I may not leave the couch this Thursday morning until Sunday night, and I’m perfectly okay with this. As a kid, I attended the tournament with my grandparents, cheered on the University of Wyoming basketball team, and witnessed their magical run to the Sweet 16 and a heartbreaking loss in the first round the following year against Loyola Marymount. Unfortunately, they have not returned to the NCAA Tournament too... Full story

  • Column: Is that a monster at the self checkout?

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 8, 2023

I’m okay with getting a little more cynical every day, and I guess it’s just part of my journey of aging. I’m at the point where most things cause me stress, but a few hit home a little harder. These are just a few examples of the little things that are turning my hair grayer by the day. I try to shop locally and small as much as I can. It is important. Unfortunately, there are times when I have to venture out to a bigger “box” store, and when the lines are long, I will use self-checkout to get in and out as quickly as possible. Every tim... Full story

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 8, 2023

There was plenty to be proud of with this year's Three Forks High School Boys' Basketball team. The Wolves' season came to an end at last week's Southern B Divisional Tournament after a 73-55 loss to Lame Deer. Three Forks opened the Divisional Tournament on... Full story

  • Column: No popcorn chicken? Time to riot

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 1, 2023

You can’t log onto social media these days without seeing some vitriol spewing in the comments sections. It really is unfortunate, and I miss the days when all I would see were pictures of people’s families. At this point, I’d even settle for watching videos of fireworks on the Fourth of July that never turn out well but get posted anyway. I do my best to navigate through the cesspool associated with an online experience, but sometimes I go down a rabbit hole I wish I would never have entered. This was certainly the case the other day, and it s... Full story

  • Column: Did I really lose the office in 15 minutes?

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Feb 22, 2023

I’ve been lucky to work in many great newsrooms with fantastic co-workers. I’ve also had some jobs in journalism that were awful experiences. Whether I liked a past job or not, they have led me to what I’m doing now in Three Forks, and I am very thankful Melissa and I have the two local publications. Whenever I’m having a challenging day, I will try to think back to a time and place when I was working for a newspaper that was not a lot of fun, and much like the 1990s TV slogan for “TOYS R US,” it turns my frown upside down. One of the stories... Full story

  • Column: Can't beat a loose meat sandwich

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Feb 15, 2023

7 is off to a great start in the kitchen, seeing I’ve gone over a month without dropping a pizza in the bottom of the oven. It has been nice enough that I could probably smoke something outside, but I recently signed up for Apple TV, so I have not been too interested in getting off the couch. With a new year, I’m sure there will be plenty of new recipes mixed in with the old traditional favorites. One of the favorites that will never fall out of the rotation is “loose meat sandwiches,” aka “tavern sandwiches.” I’m not from the Midwest, wher... Full story
