  • Our View: Thanks for all you do firefighters

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Aug 10, 2022

“Fire season” is a scary time for residents across the Treasure State. With the temperatures in the 90s for what seems like weeks and open burning banned in the Three Forks area, we wanted to take some time to thank all the area fighters and let them know how much they are appreciated. To all the volunteer firefighters in Three Forks, Willow Creek, and Clarkston, thank you for everything you do for our community. You go above and beyond donating your time for the betterment of the community, and it does not go unnoticed. When our local fir...

  • Column: Vacations Past

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Aug 10, 2022

Being an adult in the summer is far different from childhood innocence, where it was a magical time, often being outside from the early morning to when the streetlights came on. Instead of enjoying the weather and putting hundreds of miles on my bike, a successful summer day now includes keeping the house somewhat cool as the temperatures outside are near 100 degrees. I often look back at the summers as a kid with fond memories, including many amazing vacations. I was blessed to go on some great vacations, and, from time to time, I wish I... Full story

  • Column: Trash Roulette

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Aug 3, 2022

While the Voice hits newsstands on Wednesday, the paper is usually about 95 percent done by noon on Monday, so I generally start getting things together on Tuesday for the next edition. I generally like to have a column that is something lighthearted and can hopefully make a few people laugh or smile. This week I was having a rough time trying to think of something to write about, but the idea came to me when I was throwing away a morning protein shake in the kitchen trash can. After opening the lid, I had to stop things from falling out. This...

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 27, 2022

Area wrestlers will get a chance to "wrestle under the lights" on August 6 at the Keith Pierce Memorial Folkstyle Tournament at the Three Forks High School football field. According to tournament director Shaun Hungerford, this is the third time Friends of Three Forks Wrestling has hosted the event. "The kids enjoy wrestling outside. Usually, wrestling happens in the winter, and there aren't many opportunities to wrestle in an outdoor setting," said Hungerford. "I think wrestling under the... Full story

  • Column: With a shoe

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 27, 2022

When I lived for a short time in the Front Range area of Colorado, I quickly found out the residents of the state have crazy love for locally grown peaches and green chili. It is not uncommon to see green chili put on burritos, burgers, omelets, and everything in between. I was no stranger to the dish, having worked at a restaurant specializing in it, and their version was so good I’d probably eat it on my shoe. I was always leery of making it, but anytime I heard someone had a recipe, I would pick their brain for ideas. On one occasion, I s...

A Broadwater County-Wide garage sale is scheduled for Saturday, July 23. The event dates back to 2017 and was started by the Missouri Valley Marketing Group (MVM). Pamela Sample said the MVM was formed to promote and enhance business awareness and local businesses and organizations in the area, including and not limited to tourism for the good of the entire Missouri Valley. “A yard sale was an opportunity to bring people into Broadwater County to support MVM’s mission, and it has been well-received and successful since its start in 201...

It's once again time for the Three Forks Rodeo Dayz and Street Fair, with the popular local event scheduled for Friday, July 15, and Saturday, July 16. After record-setting crowds in 2021, Rodeo Board Executive Secretary Christina Kamps anticipates more of the same in 2022. "After last year, it blew me away how much bigger this is getting. It is getting bigger than I ever dreamed it would be. In the hours leading up to the start time last year, my jaw just dropped seeing the sheer number of... Full story

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 13, 2022

Three Forks wrestling will be more than well-represented at this week’s 2022 US Marine C Corps Junior & 16U Nationals in Fargo, ND. Coach Ryan Henry thinks the wrestlers are ready to go. “These boys have competed all across the country preparing for what we in Three Forks consider the end of our season, the National Tournament. I think they are prepared. Through all the hard work they and their parents have contributed to this season. I would especially like to thank Sam Beckett, Shaun Hungerford, Kelly Hogue, and Michelle Rogers for dri... Full story

  • Column: Ketchup Sammies?

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 6, 2022

One of my favorite parts of summer in the Treasure State is being able to sit outside in the evenings. I have a beautiful view from my back porch, and I often spend hours in the evening enjoying it. When I’m doing this, I often like to get something on the grill for dinner. Last year I was not able to enjoy outdoor cooking quite as much. At one point, the grill I had looked like a champion, but after buying it used, it finally ran its course and would barely produce heat. I hated cooking in a hot house, so I was elated when my mom bought me a... Full story

Last week, the Gallatin County Commission voted at their regular meeting to approve emergency orders to extend the closure. One day later, the commission hosted a meeting with area legislators to discuss the closure and replacement plans for both bridges on the road. The meeting in Bozeman included all three commissioners along with State Senator Walt Sales (R-Manhattan) and State Representatives Jennifer... Full story

  • Column: We're Moving?

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jun 29, 2022

It is a little bit disheartening I did not have a cat as a pet until I was in my 30s. I was always told I was allergic growing up, and I could never spend time with any cats. I had no idea the joy I was missing. While living in Washington state, I was able to rescue a kitty, which changed my life. I now enjoy all the craziness that goes with cats daily, and I love it. Each of my cats has a different personality, and they are probably as weird as I am. They fit in perfectly at the house. One... Full story

  • Our View: Volunteers huge for Rodeo Dayz

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jun 29, 2022

The Three Forks community will come together in a little over two weeks for the annual Rodeo Dayz Celebration. It will be an excellent time for both area residents and visitors who attend the rodeo and various other events that take place over the weekend. Any larger event in a smaller community could not happen without the many volunteers who step up to the plate to take on a multitude of tasks to help things run smoothly. A huge thanks should be given to all the volunteers from the rodeo board, chamber of commerce, and the others who help.... Full story

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jun 29, 2022

The results of this month's Marijuana Excise Taxes vote in Gallatin County were not certified and will be back on the ballot in November. The Gallatin County Commissioners voted Monday not to accept the results due to an administrative error dealing with state law regarding a notice of election needing to be posted 45 days before the vote and 30 days before the election. The commissioners also moved forward with putting the measures on the November ballot. On June 7, residents of Gallatin...

The 2021 Class B Long Jump State Champion, Murphy signed a letter of intent last Friday to compete at the University of Providence in Great Falls. • Column: The Flying Menu

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jun 22, 2022

I have the utmost respect for restaurant owners and employees. Having worked a few years at a Mexican restaurant in college, I was able to see a couple pour their heart and soul into the business with countless hours of hard work. At this time, I learned that waiting tables was a stressful position. At the same time, I still had a lot of fun and could eat world-class green chili daily, which was never bad. The restaurant I worked at was like a family, and that is something I see locally, and I absolutely love it. In last week’s edition, I h... Full story

  • Column: Mini Vacation

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jun 15, 2022

A few weeks ago, I made a three-day trip to my hometown in Wyoming for the first time since 2019. This was the longest I had ever gone without making the trip, and I had no trouble jumping out of bed at 5 a.m. so I could get on the road early. The fact the route I take does not involve an Interstate takes me through some beautiful country, but at the same time, I was cursing up a storm each time I got behind someone hauling a trailer without a passing lane anywhere to be found. I’m sure many people are comfortable passing, but it makes me a bit...
