Just hours after his retirement, Johnston was sworn in as Mayor, a position he officially started on January 3. As guests visited Johnston during the party, he said that he started with the city after a long tenure working at his uncle's grocery store. According to Johnsto... Full story

  • Our View: Please slow it down

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Dec 22, 2021

Those who like to pick up a Three Forks Voice each Wednesday may have noticed it was a few hours late last week. The roads from about Manhattan to Bozeman were a complete mess, so we waited a few hours before attempting to travel on the Interstate. There was absolutely no need to leave at the usual time to put our lives in danger on a nasty sheet of snow and ice. Over the past several years, I’ve had a couple of editorials imploring people to slow down during inclement weather conditions. An article a few weeks ago featured a quote from a law e...

  • Column: Daydreaming

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Dec 22, 2021

I’m probably one of the many who have spent time daydreaming about what it would be like to win the lottery. I probably get so involved with an elaborate daydream once a month that the phone will ring, and I will not have a clue what is going on, and there will be a considerable drool spot on my keyboard. I’m probably sure that instead of winning the “big bucks,” I would probably end up with a lifetime supply of a product that wouldn’t do me any good. Rather than pizza or oil changes, I’d end up with a never-ending supply of tampons or...

  • Column: Pics at the Stroll

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Dec 15, 2021

I was lucky enough to get a job at a daily newspaper in my hometown while I was still attending college. Don’t get me wrong, I feel like I got a good education, but I learned more in the first few weeks on the job than I did in four years of school. The daily I worked at was part of a newspaper group, and let’s say it was not the star of the company and was oftentimes an afterthought. While the more prominent newspaper in Cheyenne had nicer things, we were the “little brother” and would get hand-me-downs. When I started in the late 90’s di...

  • Column: Never a bad meal

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Dec 8, 2021

It would be pretty safe to say that I was one of many devastated a few months ago with the news that the LaHood Park Steakhouse near Cardwell was a total loss due to a fire. I recently read a book about the Sacajawea Hotel, and it mentions how Three Forks residents will often feel an “ownership” of the building, which certainly applied to LaHood. I know of many people who considered the long-established restaurant part of their family, and a special event was always celebrated with a trip to the establishment outside of Cardwell. I know qui...
