  • Lending Library added at Missouri Headwaters State Park

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 28, 2021

Over many years backpacking and camping, Patricia Wise said she found herself desperate for something new to read and always appreciated a campground or trailhead that offered reading materials. "I would trade in my old, dog-eared copy for something new with a sigh of relief," she said. After starting as an AmeriCorps volunteer at the Missouri Headwaters State Park near Three Forks, Wise thought it would be a nice gesture to add a lending library. Wise approached Park Manager Dave Andrus, who... Full story

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 28, 2021

I was always lucky on the first day of school because it was impossible to mess up the pronunciation of my name during roll call. For some of my classmates, it was awful to watch the teacher butcher their names. Although I’m completely fine with my name and who I’m named after, I used to dream about what it would be like to have an exotic name. Going to school put those daydreams out of my head in a heartbeat. I had a bad enough time with the “Jack” jokes that would never stop. By the time I was 15, I had thought there were times I might quite... Full story

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 28, 2021

In her first several weeks in the position, new Three Forks School Superintendent Dr. Rhonda Uthlaut has been impressed with her interactions with the local community. At last week’s School Board Meeting, Uthlaut said she had been welcomed by both the community and staff, including people stopping by her office. “It’s a very welcoming place, and I’m excited to be here. As far as that relationship, I feel like we are off to a very good start,” she said. During the meeting, Uthlaut told the board she and District Technical Director Bobby Lau...

  • Ordinance would allow for bottling, canning facility

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 21, 2021

Last week, the Three Forks City Council took the first steps for an ordinance that would allow for beverage, bottling, and distribution facilities up to 7,000 square feet in the Central Business and Neighborhood Highway Business Districts. The request for the zoning change to Ordinance 11-8A-2 came from Roam MT, LLC and Battle Ridge Rentals, LLC, who plan to build a brewery/tasting room on land they purchased that was once home to Jenkins Garage and is across from the Broken Spur Motel. According to the application for the zoning change, they...

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 14, 2021

The Montana Department of Transportation is hosting an open house and virtual public meeting to discuss the ongoing Headwaters Rest Area Project. The Montana Transportation Commission unanimously voted in April to approve a staff recommendation on a design-build contract for the new rest area at Interstate 90 exit 274 in Broadwater County near Three Forks. The new facility would replace the current rest area at the 19th Avenue Interchange in Bozeman. A public open house is scheduled for Tuesday,... Full story

  • Our View: Great to have Rodeo Dayz back

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 14, 2021

A year ago this week, the new bleachers at the Three Forks Rodeo grounds should have been packed. The same could be said for downtown Three Forks, where the crowds of both current and former residents lining the streets were absent. Unfortunately, the popular annual Three Forks Rodeo and adjoining celebration was canceled last July as well as a subsequent attempt to host the event in late August. While it was unfortunate the event, like so many others, did not take place in 2020, it should make the 2021 Three Forks Rodeo Dayz something to...

  • Column: Beer Can Chicken

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 14, 2021

I really enjoy beer. I also enjoy roasting chicken. Once I figured I could combine the two, I was happy for about a week and could not wait to make “beer can chicken” for the first time. I was flipping through channels on a cooking show and could not believe what I was watching. I had occasionally cooked a kielbasa in beer but had never made it a star of the show in a dish. Before I tried to adapt the recipe that was used on television, I went over to a friend’s house and watched him attempt to do “beer can chicken” on his grill. That chef...

  • Cheering for an amazing cause: Three Forks well represented at East-West Shrine Game

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 7, 2021

Each year the Montana East-West Shrine Game in June highlights some of the best football and cheerleaders throughout the state, at the same time raising money for the Shriners Children's Hospital in Spokane. Three Forks High School was well represented in 2021, with senior cheerleaders Micaela Hegar, Emma Lamb, and Ravyn Lewis all taking part in the 74th annual game that took place June 19 in Billings, with the West picking up a 21-12 victory. Lamb and Lewis had not heard of the game before... Full story

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 7, 2021

The 16th annual Headwaters Bank Walk/Run will not take place in 2021. This is the second straight cancellation of the event that is a fundraiser for the Headwaters Trails System. According to Gene Townsend, the decision was made in January when they needed to start advertising the event with possible participants. He said they were still not sure what the outlook would be with the pandemic and decided not to take the chance but added the run/walk would return the week after Three Forks Rodeo...

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 7, 2021

For pretty much the entire final semester of high school, I spent my first-hour class sitting in a chair in the attendance office. To this day, I say it was just a tremendous misunderstanding, but nobody wanted to hear my side of the story. I should probably preface this story by saying when I was 17, I was fun to be around, but I could also be a little too loud and a bit obnoxious. Whenever I’m out in public and see someone that reminds me of myself in 12th grade, I cringe and almost feel like I should sit down and write apology letters to e... Full story

Randy Johnston was the only resident to file by June 25 for the position currently held by Mayor Sean Gifford. Appointed by the Council in 2019 to fill the term of Mayor Steve Hamilton, Gifford was elected in 2020 to serve the unexpired term through 2021. The new Mayor will serve through 2025. The Three Forks School summer lunch program had some special guests last week. Gallatin County Sheriff's Deputies Tom Pallach and Kaelin Kiesel were both on hand at the school to hand out lunches and visit local youth. According to Pallach, the Sherriff's Office recently received a Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant specifically for rural communities. In addition to their patrol duties, Kiesel said she and Pallach have been getting out to meet with area youth, and a primary...

  • Column: Stuck in the parking lot

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jun 30, 2021

To say it has been hot the past few days in Three Forks would be an understatement. I’m thinking not only could you have fried an egg on the sidewalk, but it was also warm enough to have cooked a complete Irish breakfast with ham, bacon, sausage, toast, and potatoes. I know many people do well in the heat, but I am not one of them. When I was little, my grandparents retired and moved to Arizona, and we would take a vacation there each summer. I’m not sure why we didn’t just go ahead and do this during Christmas vacation, but instead, we went... Full story

Potts said she has lived in Three Forks for about eight years and was interested in becoming more involved. The seat will be up for election in May of 2022....

  • Column: Like Mike

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jun 23, 2021

A famous Gatorade commercial saturated the airwaves in the early 1990s featuring the famous slogan of “Be Like Mike.” The campaign with the iconic former Chicago Bull Michael Jordan had millions repeating the catchphrase, and I’m sure that I probably even said it a few times. I had not thought of the commercial in nearly three decades when I was reminded of a friend, who also had the name, Mike. While I was spending a few minutes reminiscing about all the chaos the two of us created, I realized that Mike does not or has never had a socia... Full story

  • Shively tosses perfect game

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jun 23, 2021

Mayson Shively did last week what no player in Gallatin Valley Outlaw history had accomplished. The soon-to-be senior at Three Forks High School pitched a perfect game in a 22-0 five-inning win over Mead (Spokane) at the annual Gjerde American Legion Baseball Tournament in Lewistown. The game was shortened to five innings because of the Legion run rule. After not allowing a baserunner in the first four innings and his team taking care of business with their bats, Shively said nobody talked... Full story

Whenever there is a big sporting event or milestone at my house, it always involves food, and a menu is often planned weeks in advance. The whole house is involved with the decision-making, and whenever the topic of a big meal is planned, the kids will often say they want homemade macaroni and cheese. It's not the simplest meal I make, but it is always met with smiles. It's hard sometimes to get teenagers happy about stuff in the house, but as soon as I start making, you can see a change in the... Full story

At the end of June, Three Forks Superintendent Jeff Elliott will be stepping down from the position. While there were undoubtedly challenges during his three years, Elliott is walking away proud of what he accomplished and confident of the district's direction. Prior to his being hired in 2018, Elliott had previously worked as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal. With many friends who grew up in Three Forks and knowing many people in the area, Elliott was excited when the... Full story
