I've learned it is never an excellent idea to go grocery shopping when you are hungry. It's also a terrible idea to watch the Food Network when between meals. As much as I know either one is not a great idea, I still do both. When it is not eating before the store, my basket is never healthy. It instead is probably more akin to what a college-aged kid would buy at the store after his parents left $100 bucks because they were going out of town for a few days. Think lots of frozen pizzas and...

  • Column: The Gas Plant

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 24, 2021

My first couple of summer jobs were both at fast-food restaurants. After a stint the summer after I graduated high school as a glorified gopher at a Days Inn, I found myself employed at a McDonalds the summer after my first year at the University of Wyoming. By the time I reached the summer before the first of three or four senior years, I knew that I needed to make a lot more money and would have to ditch the comfortable and stinky familiarity of fast food. It turns out I would not have to search for it as a family member was able to help me...

  • Our View: Wrestling on the Rise in Three Forks

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 17, 2021

What the Three Forks High School wrestling team has accomplished since the program was re-established in 2017 has been astonishing. Over the first three seasons, the program slowly started to build its numbers. With some talented newcomers, they were able to finish third in Class B at the recent State Tournament that included two individual champions and two fourth-place finishers. The fact Three Forks was able to finish third with just six wrestlers at state says a lot about the talent in the wrestling room. The hard-working coaches are also p...

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 17, 2021

For many people, getting home and going straight to the kitchen is probably not their idea of fun. While there are certainly probably one or two nights a week, I want nothing to do with cooking dinner. For the most part, I do enjoy cooking. Having an ice-cold adult beverage while I'm cooking is about as relaxing as it gets for me. It's my own in-home Zen garden without the sand everywhere and a rake to step on. I have a few tried and true recipes that I will use over time, but I also like to...

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 10, 2021

According to Customer Service Manager Amy Danielsen, because Wheat Montana is an essential business, they were allowed to keep the mill and bakery running normally, with some employee precautions. • Column: Did you really just turn off the lights?

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 10, 2021

The older I get, the less patience I have for people who are being ridiculous. The teenage version of myself most likely would have described the current version of myself as a cranky jerk who likes to yell at vehicles as they pass him, going way too fast on the Interstate. Social media can be the absolute worst for someone who gets riled up about things. For whatever reason, I always like to open social media right after I wake up, and it usually gets me fuming about politics or something else, and is no way to start the day. I’ve seen many p...

The Three Forks High School boys basketball team had their season come to an end at last week's Southern Divisional Tournament Billings. The Wolves trailed 44-24 in the third quarter and 52-38 in the fourth before storming back into the game and pulling as close as 56-53 with two...

  • Plaza Bar happy to be back to regular hours, adding Montana Sports Bet terminal

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 3, 2021

According to Plaza Bar owner Eric Raube, the early stages of the Covid-19 shutdown drastically affected his business located at 204 S. Main. He was also able to witness what he described as amazing community support of the Plaza and its employees. "That has been a very positive outcome of the whole pandemic, the community coming together and supporting each other," he said. When the pandemic hit, the Plaza Bar was able to stay open and operate as a liquor store, but Raube said that is just a...

  • Our View: Donations Show Best of Community

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 3, 2021

The February 17 issue of the Voice included an article from the City of Three Forks officials thanking those who donated $156,760 to five projects in 2020. A large portion of the donations was for the new bleachers at the rodeo grounds. Other contributions were for the new ice staking rink, expansion of the Headwaters Trail System, the fire department volunteers, and library programs. An article in this week’s Voice also includes a story about the donation of a new floor for the fire department by a local business. There is so much negative n...

  • Column: Is he really pounding the desk?

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 3, 2021

Throughout my newspaper career, I have seen a little bit of everything. A majority of it has been a positive experience, and this is what I want to be doing, but my previous job as a publisher certainly added some gray hairs. Most of the people I dealt with were easy to work with, but I had a few that were not. On one occasion, an elected official came into the office very upset about a letter to the editor. He started screaming and yelling at me, and I politely kept telling him that I did not write the letter. The madder he got, the less he li...

"This is great news for folks in every corner of Montana-more vaccines means we're that much closer to reopening our economy and getting folks back to work," said Tester. "Our state has proven that we have the capacity to distribute more vaccines than we're getting, so I'm proud to have...

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 3, 2021

Just moments after the Three Forks High School boys basketball teams 59-35 5B District semifinal loss February 25 at Manhattan, Head Coach Terry Hauser said he was unsure how his team would bounce back. It turned out the Wolves would face adversity like a champion in their elimination game on February 26 and defeat Boulder 75-56. The following day, they would defeat Big Timber 50-47 to finish third at the 5B Tournament and advance to the Southern B Divisional Tournament for the fourth straight... Full story
