7 was yet again a year of positive news for the Headwaters Trail System. During his annual report to the City of Three Forks, Chairman Gene Townsend discussed several grants awarded to them over the year and thanked all those area residents, businesses, and organizations that helped out with the popular local trail system. Earlier this month, the Gallatin County Commission moved forward with Level One Approval for using public funding to purchase two conservation easements. It was another busy year at the Three Forks Rodeo Arena. At the final City Council Meeting of 2023 last week, Three Forks Rodeo Board of Directors President Casey Elmose presented the annual report to the governing body. It's been a strong start to conference play for the Three Forks High School Boys' Basketball team. The Wolves opened 5B District play on December 9 with an impressive 59-51 road win in Boulder over Jefferson High School. In October of 2022, the Three Forks United Methodist Church hosted its first event for the newly created Scrapyard Student Ministries Youth Group, with 11 students participating in a pumpkin carving event. A year later, the group had 40 youth at a pumpkin carving event in 2023, and, according to Pastor Sara Lattimore, around 50 students have entered the doors of the church annex to participate. With Christmas less than two weeks away and colder weather on the horizon, officials from two local fire departments shared some safety reminders for the holidays and winter. Regarding Christmas safety, Three Forks Volunteer Fire Chief Keith Aune said to use a real tree with plenty of water, use heavy-duty extension cords for items using more power, and not plug too many items into the cord. Sometimes, the little things in life can make someone happy. After living without trash service for four and a half years, I was delighted to finally have a can that would be picked up once a week. Going to a sanitation site several times a week was never fun, and I would have much rather just wheeled out a can. It was a busy weekend of action with plenty of mat time for the Three Forks/Ennis High School Wrestling team. Following a packed weekend of wrestling at the Jim Street Mining City Duals in Butte and the Whitehall Duals, Wolves Head Coach Nye Howey was pleased with the team’s performance at both events. As it inches closer to 2024, work continues to replace the two bridges on Old Town Road. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is currently completing an Environmental Assessment to facilitate the acquisition of 30 acres for permanent inclusion into the Missouri Headwaters State Park near Three Forks. The 30-acre Hart property would be purchased by the Montana State Parks Foundation (MSPF) with funds provided by a grant from Montana's Outdoor Legacy Foundation and the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Trust. When I was a kid, the lead up to Christmas was excruciating. I could not wait until Christmas Eve to go and spend time at several different family gatherings and open a single present when we got back home. As the Three Forks/Ennis High School Wrestling team readies for the second week of competition, they will do so with a roster that includes senior leaders Alex Fletcher, Jack Hayder, Gabe Hungerford, and Cole Rogers. While residents of the Gallatin Valley have the convenience of dropping off items at recycle bins, including at 150 E. Railroad Avenue in Three Forks, county officials remind them to be mindful of what they deposit.
