Over two years ago, Kim Hilton and his partner walked out of their home for the final time. The house had sold, and the new landlord raised the rent. They couldn't afford it. Their Social Security payments couldn't cover the cost of any apartments in northwestern Montana's Flathead Valley. Hilton's partner was able to move into her daughter's studio apartment. There wasn't enough space for Hilton, so they reluctantly split up. At 68 years old, he moved into his truck - a forest-green Chevy...
By Kirsten Smith, Heather Grenier, Mike Chavers, and Gallatin County Commissioners Gallatin County's youth are facing a mental health crisis. Fourteen percent of local teens reported attempting suicide last year, and 21% have seriously considered it. Yet many of these children have no local treatment options and are sent far from home to facilities designed for adults. This is a critical gap in care that we can address by supporting the development of a dedicated youth behavioral health campus... Full story
A few times a year, we will have family travel to Montana to visit us. While changing my set-in-stone weekly routine is always a bit stressful, I’m always happy to have people come and stay. Along with some wild conversations and a few drinks, food is always a key puzzle piece in ensuring they have a good stay. We always try to take them to some of our favorite local restaurants, and I also spend a crazy amount of time in the kitchen preparing something I hope will be remembered until the next visit. When my son visited a few weeks ago, I w...

On the funding front, several House Republicans have already signaled plans to tackle one of the most pressing education issues in the state: teacher pay. Low starting salaries for early career educators are a driving factor in...

The Montana Healthcare Foundation released three new reports analyzing Montana Medicaid. The reports found that the HELP Act – or "Medicaid expansion" – continues to expand health care access, improve health outcomes, and control health care costs. New findings from "2025 Medicaid in Montana" show that in addition to the program's benefits for the health of enrollees and the state's economy, Medicaid expansion has had a substantial impact on the health care system, particularly in rural areas. Specifically, reimbursement from Medicaid exp...

This past summer, Cruzado announced her retirement from MSU as of the end of the aca...
In November, Montana voters safeguarded the right to abortion in the state’s constitution. They also elected a new chief justice to the Montana Supreme Court who was endorsed by anti-abortion advocates. That seeming contradiction is slated to come to a head this year. People on polar sides of the abortion debate are preparing to fight over how far the protection for abortion extends, and the final say will likely come from the seven-person state Supreme Court. With the arrival of new Chief Justice Cory Swanson, who ran as a judicial c...
