Going into last week's Divisional Meet in Columbus, Three Forks Speech, Drama, and Debate Head Coach Bronwyn Evans hoped to get half the team's 15 competitors to qualify for state. The Wolves did just that and more, finishing the tournament with an amazing 11 qualifying for this week's State meet, which is scheduled for January 26 and 27 in Choteau. "I am super proud of the hard work and dedication of all of the students to prepare for Divisional. Their commitment showed. A highlight for me was... Full story

According to Three Forks Superintendent Rhonda Uthlaut, several district staff and board members received the email on the evening of January 16, and they believe at least 75 districts in Montana were affected. Whitehall Superintendent Hannah Nieskens said administrators received a non-specific threat mass email from an individual representing a terrorist organization in Yemen, adding the U.S. Attorney’s Office, FBI, and J... Human trafficking is not just a big city problem — it’s happening right here in Montana. Which is why, during National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, I’m encouraging Montanans to learn the signs of human trafficking and report it if they see it. If folks don’t know what it is and how to report it, they can’t help us stop it. Let’s call human trafficking what it is: modern-day slavery. Traffickers — often organized criminal enterprises — are profiting at the expense of adults and children who are forced to perform labor or engage in commerc... Full story
With the NFL playoffs now down to four teams, plenty of football has been on at my house lately. While I would love to throw some ribs on the pellet grill, the temperatures as of late have not been ideal for outdoor cooking, so I’ve instead used my trusted friend, the crock pot. I’m unsure how old our crock pot is, but it is getting up there. While its days are numbered, it’s still doing its job, and there is no better time to use it than for a big game. We will do a lot of roasts and soups, but I cannot think of anything better than chees... Full story
Lawmakers may soon have an opportunity to override Gov. Greg Gianforte's veto of a popular bill that sorts out how Montana spends its marijuana tax revenue. Lewis and Clark County District Court Judge Mike Menahan's order last week doesn't necessarily mean that the 2023 Legislature's Senate Bill 442 will become law. But it does provide clarity on a thorny constitutional issue that arose on the final day of the legislative session: The governor cannot veto a bill in a way that denies the... Full story
Among several changes to Montana’s income tax system that took effect at the beginning of the year is a provision that makes income from tips subject to state taxes. The shift aligns Montana with the federal tax system, in which tips have long been taxed alongside salaries and wages. It also means that many service-sector workers will likely have their state income tax obligation increased by hundreds of dollars a year. The change was made by the 2021 Legislature as part of Senate Bill 399, a comprehensive reform measure that reshaped many p... Full story
Earlier this month, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte launched a property tax task force to provide recommendations to reform the property tax system and reduce the burden on property taxpayers. “Property taxes are too high. Our $1,350 property tax rebate helped Montana homeowners last year and will help them again this year,” Gov. Gianforte said. “We, however, need thoughtful, deliberate, long-term reforms to keep property taxes as low as possible, because the increasing strain of rising property taxes shouldn’t force Montana homeowners to cons...
