  • Fire season forecast: Wetter than expected

    Amanda Eggert, Montana Free Press|Jun 19, 2024

Montanans can anticipate a generally normal fire season this summer, a regional fire weather forecaster reported at a briefing last week in Bozeman. Dan Borsum, a Missoula-based forecaster with the Northern Rockies Coordinating Center, said springtime moisture has mitigated the impacts of a generally dismal winter snowpack in Montana. (Water supply forecasters noted in early January that half of their monitoring stations were reporting record-low accumulations due to an exceptionally dry... Full story

  • Council to explore solar panels at sewer lagoons

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jun 19, 2024

The Three Forks City Council unanimously voted last week to seek more information about possibly adding solar panels to the Sewer Lagoons. At the June 11 meeting, City Treasurer Kelly Smith told the Council that about four years ago, someone approached them about installing solar panels at the sewer plant, but the governing body did not seem too interested. According to Smith, the city spends $60,000 or more a year on power at the sewer lagoon, and Public Works Superintendent Steve Johnston thought it would be a good idea to add the possible ad... Full story

Brown sentenced Zachary Norman to 100 years in the Montana State Prison for the January 15, 2022, shooting death of Chase Estabrook in Three Forks. Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jun 19, 2024

Earlier this month, the Three Rivers Medical Clinic in Three Forks reported encountering a handful of embedded ticks. Montana DPHHS Communications Officer Holly Matkin recently shared tips for area residents about tick removal and prevention. • Where electricity transmission and the energy transition meet

    Amanda Eggert, Montana Free Press|Jun 19, 2024

Project developers, policymakers and think tanks working in the capital-intensive arena of energy development say a new Montana-North Dakota high-voltage transmission line could be a game changer for an area of the American West that's seen limited expansion to its power grid in four decades. The North Plains Connector Line would be the region's first major grid expansion since the construction of a 500-kilovolt line that carries power from the Colstrip coal-fired power plant to population...

  • Our View: Plenty to do this summer in Three Forks

    Three Forks Voice|Jun 19, 2024

As I arrived at the Three Forks United Methodist Church on the morning of June 1, I could not believe how beautiful of a day it already was. A nice crowd arrived on a Saturday morning for the grand opening of the Greater Good Thrift Store, which was celebrated with a ribbon cutting and hosted by the Three Forks Chamber of Commerce. Standing outside, I chatted for a couple of minutes with a local business owner who echoed my thoughts on how nice of a day it was but also shared with me what a... Full story

  • Column: Why is purple dripping from his hair

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jun 19, 2024

With a weekly newspaper, it can be challenging to do a lot of traveling. Outside one or two weekend trips a year to my hometown, seven hours away in Wyoming, I don’t usually visit anywhere else. Because I cannot travel much, it’s always a treat when family or friends visit Montana. At the start of May, my uncle from Arizona contacted me about visiting while he was with his family on an extended trip throughout the western United States. I don’t see my uncle often, so spending a couple of days with him was nice. While they only stayed two nights... Full story

  • Update from the Three Forks Mosquito Control District

    Jun 19, 2024

It’s that time of year again that those little biters are coming out and we just like to get a Public Service Announcement out to let people know we’re out in the fields, checking storm drains, and any standing water. Surveying, dipping, testing and treating. We have been working and repairing our 10 traps to get set out in various sites around the district. These traps give us a number of adult mosquitoes in the area. When the threshold is met we will adulticide, that’s when you will hear and see us more noticeable in the evening/night treat...

  • MSU Extension recommends nitrogen applications for wheat protein following wet spring weather

    MSU News Service|Jun 19, 2024

With a wetter-than-average May in most of Montana, providing additional mid-season nitrogen to wheat could boost grain protein levels and increase profit, according to a Montana State University Extension specialist. "With the drought conditions last fall and winter, many producers likely fertilized with less nitrogen than normal due to lower than expected yields," said Clain Jones, MSU Extension soil fertility specialist and professor in the Department of Land Resources and Environmental...
