  • Our View: Event huge for Headwaters Trail System

    Jul 24, 2024

To say the Headwaters Trail System is a boon for the Three Forks area would be an understatement. Throughout the year, the 12-mile trail system is utilized by both area residents and visitors to the area. It’s a big deal for Three Forks. This weekend, the annual Headwaters Bank Run on Saturday, July 27, will be an excellent opportunity to give back to the trail system. Throughout the year, Trail System Director Gene Townsend and others work hard to obtain government grants for both maintenance and expansion. There have been plenty of recent s... Full story

  • Guest Editorial from the Area IV Governing Board and Advisory Council

    Jul 24, 2024

We are the Area IV Governing Board and Advisory Council, which oversees older adult services in Broadwater, Gallatin, Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, Meagher, and Park Counties. We write to implore Governor Gianforte’s administration to prioritize improved resources to deliver Older Americans Act services in our six counties. Montana’s Medicaid unwinding process has largely ended and we are concerned about significant harm and unintended consequences on elders across the state. Specifically, many older Montanans should never have lost their ben...

  • Column: Walking up 'B' street with a typewriter

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 24, 2024

Summer was always quite the adventure as a kid. While there was certainly plenty of time spent watching awful daytime television or Atlanta Braves baseball, there were countless hours spent outside. I vividly remember how much fun it was to be outside until the streetlights came on, playing all sorts of different night games. I'm not sure if it's because kids don't get outside as much, or my neighborhood is older, or perhaps a combination of both, but the younger generation is really missing... Full story

  • High temperatures trigger widespread fishing restrictions in Montana, Yellowstone

    Amanda Eggert, Montana Free Press|Jul 24, 2024

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks has implemented fishing restrictions on 13 western Montana rivers that are exceeding temperature thresholds following an underwhelming snowpack and a heat spell last week that broke records in some parts of the state. The list includes both low-flow rivers that see hoot owl restrictions more years than not, such as the Big Hole, Beaverhead and Jefferson rivers, and other, higher-volume rivers that typically hold onto enough water to stay open for afternoon anglin...

  • Wildfires Increase Flooding Risks

    Jul 24, 2024

Recent hot temperatures and dry conditions have triggered wildfires throughout the state. While some wildfire effects are predictable, a lesser-known effect can be an increased risk of flooding due to wildfire burns. “It is difficult to think about flooding in the middle of or after a wildfire event. We urge residents to be observant of rapidly changing conditions, especially on uphill slopes, and be prepared for the possibility of flooding,” said Traci Sears, the Montana National Flood Insurance Program Coordinator at the Department of Nat...

  • Eric Lee Herrera

    Jul 24, 2024

On or about April 5th of this year, shortly after his 56th birthday, chronic alcohol use stopped the beat of our son's heart and the beat of his drums; but he is finally at peace and his spirit can't be touched. Eric Lee Herrera was born in Seattle, Washington, on April 3, 1968, to Paula Herrera and her husband Lonnie. Later, Eric and Paula moved to Kalispell, Montana, where he spent his childhood. Eric had his bike, buddies, grandpa and grandma, mom, and the Schmid and Sunde families, along... Full story

  • Community rallies in support of Horse Gulch Fire evacuees

    Zeke Lloyd, Montana Free Press|Jul 24, 2024

On Wednesday, July 17, Brandi Castleberry stood behind the counter of the store at Kim's Marina & Resort, looking out over the empty room. Just outside the window, a fleet of boats floated idly at the docks. A few more dotted the water beyond. A thick cloud of white smoke hung over Canyon Ferry Lake. The Horse Gulch Fire had just turned a week old. "Typically we are on a waiting list, fully booked, with everything from RV sites to boat rentals," resort owner Lukas Jewett said. Jewett estimates t...

  • August Historical Society Meeting Cancelled

    Jul 24, 2024

The August meeting of the Three Forks Area Historical Society has been cancelled on August 1st so we can serve our famous Walking Tacos at the Farmers’ Market that Thursday. We are looking forward to having everyone visit us at Farmers’ Market to check out the new pavilion next to the depot! It will be a great shady spot for the park’s picnic tables and a reminder of our past railroad history when there was a similar, but larger, pavilion next to the old Milwaukee Railroad Depot just down the street. Clay Feliciano has done a terrific job o... Full story

  • Headwaters Country Jam: 49 Winchester headed to the 'Bridge' near Three Forks

Alan Sculley, For the Three Forks Voice|Jul 24, 2024

"Leavin' This Holler," the new album from 49 Winchester, includes the song "Make It Count," which refers to both the opportunity and the challenge that faced the band when work began on the album. The previous 49 Winchester album, "Fortune Favors the Bold," had marked an inflection point for the band. After releasing three albums and building a touring base as a true do-it-yourself indie act, 49 Winchester had signed with New West Records and seen "Fortune Favors the Bold" get rave reviews and...

    Jul 24, 2024

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is looking for public feedback on work from a citizen advisory council tasked with developing guiding principles for developing a new Mule Deer Management Plan. “We know how concerned people are with mule deer numbers across the state,” said FWP Director Dustin Temple. “Our focus is developing a new plan that will guide our efforts to manage herds well into the future. The council’s work is a critical first step for our planning process.” In early 2024, FWP solicited applications from Montana citizens to serve on...
