  • Farewell Fawn: Venzor reflects on time as library trustee, director

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 26, 2023

In 2009, Fawn Venzor became a Trustee on the Three Forks Library Board. After nearly ten years of serving in the role, Venzor decided to take a leap and apply for the vacant Library Director position. After serving in the director position since April 2019, Venzor will be stepping down at the end of the month and moving out of the area. She was honored on July 21 with a farewell party at the library. Venzor was emotional talking about her four years in the position. "One of the hardest parts of... Full story

  • The Heartbeat of the Community: Volunteers Needed in Three Forks

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 26, 2023

At a structure fire last Monday afternoon on Ash Street, Three Forks Volunteer Fire Department Chief Keith Aune was in a difficult situation, having to run both the structure engine and incident command. While the department can have a roster of up to 28, there are currently 12 active volunteers, and according to Aune, they are in a critical state. "As Chief, I should be in a command vehicle running incident command for the call. Due to the time of the call, I was running the structure engine an... Full story

  • Writers on the Range: Too many tourists follow a leader

Marjorie Woodruff, Writers on the Range|Jul 26, 2023

A spectacular picture recently appeared on social media of a young lady in Arizona. She was poised on the edge of a cliff emblazoned with sunset colors. Immediately her online followers clamored to know where the picture was taken, so "I can get one just like it." Turns out that it was taken on an off-trail route at the end of a potholed dirt road on the Navajo Nation, and required a permit to even enter the area. Also, I bet she did not climb to that precarious perch on that cliff wearing...

  • Column: Can you sit down with the corn on the cob?

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 26, 2023

I know quite a few people who are very afraid of clowns, others who freak out over snakes, and a few that let out a blood-curdling shriek if they see even the most harmless spider. I am not a fan of the previously mentioned trio, either. When I was around 10, my grandma gave me a clown doll for my birthday, and thinking of it sitting in my room at night still freaks me out. I swear that thing would come alive at night and try to steal my breath. As much as I was not a fan of that clown, I would not say it was a phobia. It was a creepy gift for... Full story

Persevering against all odds is an extraordinary display of strength and determination. It means facing countless obstacles, setbacks, and failures yet refusing to give up or be defeated. It entails finding the courage to keep going despite adversity, even when it feels impossible. It requires a deep belief in oneself and a relentless drive to achieve one’s goals. The journey may be filled with doubt, pain, and heartbreak, but those who persevere choose to rise above it. They find motivation in their dreams, inspire others with their r...

    Jul 26, 2023

A woman was killed in an encounter with a bear Saturday on the Buttermilk Trail near the town of West Yellowstone. About 8 a.m. Saturday, game wardens with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks were notified that a hiker had found a woman deceased on the trail, about 8 miles west of West Yellowstone. FWP wardens and bear specialists, along with staff from other agencies, found that the woman had wounds consistent with a bear attack. They also found tracks from an adult grizzly bear and at least one cub near the site. They did not see any bears or... Full story

  • 'It can't be my wife, because it's just food poisoning'

    Matt Standal, Montana Free Press|Jul 26, 2023

Jon Ventura hastily double-checked the meaning of "code blue" on his smartphone while seated outside the Bozeman Health emergency room. It was the afternoon of April 17, and his wife, Donna, had been rushed to the hospital suffering what they suspected was a routine case of food poisoning after lunch at Dave's Sushi in downtown Bozeman. The 63-year-old nuclear researcher from Belgrade was convinced the call over the loudspeaker had to be for someone else. "It can't be my wife, because it's just... Full story

  • FWP adjusts mule deer quotas in response to spring surveys

    Jul 26, 2023

While mule deer populations remain steady in portions of the state, spring green-up surveys conducted by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks wildlife biologists showed populations in some parts of the state remain lower than desired, and as a result, licenses available to hunters in those areas have been cut back. Over the past few years, persistent drought, particularly in southeast Montana, has affected both survival and recruitment rates for mule deer. This drought has also, at times, been coupled with hard winters, making it especially...
