  • City discusses SLIPA funding

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 31, 2024

The City of Three Forks may need to change how it spends $172,000 in State-Local Infrastructure Partnership Act (SLIPA) funding. In 2023, the Montana State Legislature appropriated $20 million from the state general fund to the Montana Department of Commerce to be distributed to incorporated cities and towns as grants based on infrastructure repair and maintenance. The funding included $172,000 set aside for the City of Three Forks, which requires a 25 percent match of $43,000. At a January 2024 meeting, the City Council approved a... Full story

  • What to know about smoke, heat and health

    Zeke Lloyd, Montana Free Press|Jul 31, 2024

When teachers, nurses and coaches call to ask about air quality in their rural Montana school districts, staff at the Department of Environmental Quality sometimes feel limited by the information that's available from the current network of regulatory sensors scattered around the state. "That just doesn't feel good enough," DEQ's Air Research and Monitoring Supervisor Kelly Dorsi said. "So when we had the opportunity to apply for this Advanced Monitoring for Communities Grant as part of the... Full story

Alan Sculley, For the Three Forks Voice|Jul 31, 2024

When Nick Piccininni got the call in 2020 from Yonder Mountain String Band to sub in for some shows in place of mandolin player Jacob Jolliff, he wasn't expecting it to be a big deal. "At the time, I didn't think anything would necessarily come of it," Piccininni recalled in a phone interview. "I guess, my main hope was that it might help my career in terms of just rubbing shoulders with the right people." What it's become is a chance to become a long-term member of Yonder Mountain String Band,... Full story

  • U.S. Senators ask USPS to reconsider decision to terminate air service

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 31, 2024

Last week, the United States Postal Service announced it would suspend air service to support priority and express mail in Montana. The decision did not sit well with Montana's two U.S. Senators. In his monthly Rural Press Call, U.S. Senator Jon Tester blasted the decision and urged Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to restore air service immediately. "Montana isn't exactly a small state. It takes a while to get across, and when you have to drive it, it delays, delays, delays. For those reasons,... Full story

  • Guest Op-Ed: Reverse Annuity Mortgage Loan Program Helps Montana Seniors Stay in their Homes

Cheryl Cohen, Montana Department of Commerce|Jul 31, 2024

As Montanans face more economic challenges due to inflation, it can weigh heavily on our most vulnerable populations, including senior citizens. Housing costs are soaring across the nation, thanks in part due to a lack of supply keeping up with demand. While many Montana seniors own their own homes and have little or no remaining mortgage debt, they struggle to make ends meet on fixed incomes. Montana’s seniors deserve to age with dignity and to live safely and independently at home throughout their golden years. Through the Montana Board of H...

  • Column: It's best not to engage with some people

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 31, 2024

By JACK H. SMITH Three Forks Voice I’m sure most people probably have a friend or family member who gets a little too caught up in the political landscape. Whether sitting around the Thanksgiving dinner table or nonstop posting on social media, their lives seem consumed by the colors blue and red. I have a good friend from my hometown who fits the bill perfectly. A few years ago, he started to post about politics occasionally, and now, that is all he does. I’m unsure how he’s gotten any work done in the last few weeks because it has been nonst...

In a trio of rulings, Judge Gregory Todd found that the arguments made by the state and hunting groups that joined the lawsuit were more compelling than those brought by the plaintiff, United Property Owners of Montana.
