By now, most Montana property owners have opened their 2023 Property Classification and Appraisal Notices, and many have been surprised by the Montana Department of Revenue's estimate of their property's market value. It's no secret that property in Montana has been selling at higher and higher prices, but the size of the increased values is astonishing to everyone - including me. These value increases and estimated 2023 General Taxes described on the notice - based upon the prior year's mills -... Full story

  • Column: You finish everything, even the cabbage rolls

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Aug 2, 2023

When I was little, my mom did a fantastic job incorporating many vegetables into dinner. While the veggies were undoubtedly good for me, there were a few that I could not stand. As is the case in many households across the country, I had to take everything that was on the dinner table and finish it. If there were my arch nemesis of Brussels sprouts or another hated foe in cauliflower, I would still have to finish everything on my plate. I was not allowed to take a tiny portion, either. I’ve heard horror stories of children who sat at the t... Full story

Montana health officials ended Medicaid health insurance coverage for 19,244 people in May, bringing the total number of people removed from the public health program up to 34,204 since the state began reevaluating enrollee eligibility in April — an administrative power it did not have during the federally designated pandemic emergency. The state health department, which is releasing updated figures on the redetermination process roughly once a month, published the summary of May data on Friday. Nearly half of the 40,334 people up for c...

  • What are Montana's busiest highways?

    Eric Dietrich, Montana Free Press|Aug 2, 2023

It's the time of year when it seems like everybody and their dog is hitting the road for summer trips, so we thought we'd take a look at which stretches of Montana highway rank as the busiest. As it turns out, according to data from the Montana Department of Transportation, the state's highway hot spots tend to cluster around urban areas. A stretch of King Avenue West in Billings just north of Interstate 90 has the dubious distinction of being the busiest road in the state, with about 40,000...

  • How Breastfeeding Moms Can Increase Their Milk Supply

    Jessica Walsh|Aug 2, 2023

August 1st through the 7th is World Breastfeeding Week. The baby formula shortages from last year left parents who use formula struggling to find enough formula for their babies. Some babies are exclusively breastfed, and others are exclusively formula-fed, but often moms turn to both breastfeeding and formula feeding either simultaneously or at different times. For moms who are breastfeeding, it's important to know how to increase their milk supply, whether their baby is going through a growth...

  • Coaches Corner: A Diamond in the Rough

    Ellie West, Contributing Writer|Aug 2, 2023

Did you know diamonds are fascinating gems that form deep within the Earth's mantle under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, taking millions of years to develop? Not all diamonds make it to the Earth's surface, as some remain trapped in the mantle due to geological processes. However, those that reach the surface become the valuable and cherished gemstones we adore today. When mined and brought to the Earth's surface, diamonds undergo a meticulous process of polishing or cutting. This skilled and intricate procedure transforms them...
