Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks continues to monitor fish health in the upper Missouri River Basin and has collected several tissue samples from sick fish this summer. Thus far, the sampling efforts have shown no abnormal results. Staff have received seasonal reports of sick or dead fish in the Big Hole, Beaverhead and Ruby rivers this summer. Sick fish were reported in 2023 as well. Compared to the fish population size, angler reports of sick fish have been relatively few. FWP staff have leaned on prompt reports of sick fish from anglers and...
We call Montana "The Last Best Place" for good reason. Millions of visitors come to share in our state's breathtaking landscapes and vibrant communities each year, supporting nearly 50,000 Montana jobs and bringing at least $5 billion to our state annually, according to a study by the University of Montana. This revenue fueled our post-pandemic recovery, providing a lifeline to our hotels, local restaurants, and countless small businesses. I know how crucial these visitors are to our state's eco...
I’m the type of person who can’t entirely function appropriately without a to-do list. The lists come in very handy for work. I usually have a list of things I need to complete for the upcoming edition of the newspaper and a master story list that constantly evolves as the year goes by. I also utilize lists in my personal life. My “personal” list recently needed some updating, with getting in much better shape skyrocketing to the top of the list. Sometimes, it gets a bit out of hand when I start making lists of lists that I need to make. While... Full story

The wolf population in Montana remains healthy, according to the 2023 Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Wolf Report. Increased harvest during the 2023 wolf season has not yet resulted in an estimated decline to the statewide total. However, FWP biologists expect to see a moderate decline in wolf numbers next year resulting from the increased harvest in early 2024. "We are committed to following the law to reduce wolf numbers to a sustainable level, which means ensuring Montana has a healthy state...

A passenger railroad project connecting Seattle to Chicago could potentially bypass Helena without the support of Lewis and Clark County, according to county and railroad project officials. The Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority, along with the Federal Railroad Administration, is leading the project to restore the North Coast Hiawatha route and has garnered the support of route-affected counties across southern Montana. Lewis and Clark County is not one of them, despite giving $10,000 to the...
One year ago, the Office of Public Instruction debuted a new system and a revised set of regulations designed to ensure that Montana’s more than 800 public schools meet a state-mandated threshold of educational quality. Now state and local education leaders are taking stock of those accreditation changes and identifying areas for ongoing improvement, a conversation that will continue to shape how Montana holds its K-12 schools accountable to state laws and the students they serve. TK Under the new accreditation rules, OPI reported this month t...
After a nearly 21-year career with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the agency's lead fisheries expert has resigned. Eileen Ryce, a fisheries biologist with a PhD, said inadequate support from her superiors while she ran a division that touches on two areas of critical interest in Montana - water and wildlife management - led her to resign. In a letter dated Aug. 1, 2024, Ryce briefly referenced what she called "baseless allegations" that purportedly motivated department leaders to put Ryce on... Full story

Commerce, having responsibly managed Montana’s HCV program, must now spend down its HUD-held reserves and close its waitlist to e...
QR codes skyrocketed in popularity during the touch-free days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and now they're everywhere. From menus to forms and posters, who doesn't like these scannable shortcuts to information and fast, frictionless payments? Now QR codes also serve a much different purpose: as a tool for scammers. In December 2023, the Federal Trade Commission warned of a new form of phishing. Appropriately coined quishing, the scam leverages QR codes to trick people into divulging personal inform...
