  • State backlog could let some new Gallatin County construction skip next year's property taxes

    Eric Dietrich, Montana Free Press|Sep 4, 2024

Overwhelmed by a flood of property tax appeals following last year’s historic valuation spike, the Montana Department of Revenue acknowledged earlier this month that its Bozeman-area office fell behind this year on tracking new construction that should be added to Gallatin County’s tax rolls. According to Gallatin County Chief Financial Officer Justine Swanson, the snafu will delay the adoption of local government budgets and push back mailing of November tax bills across the county. Additionally, she said in an interview this week, unless reve...

  • Guest Opinion: The Greater Yellowstone Conservation and Recreation Act is the best way forward

Michael Scott and Tim Stevens, The Daily Montanan|Sep 4, 2024

For more than 50 years, generations of passionate, persistent citizens worked hard to ensure the Gallatin and Madison Ranges continue providing vital wildlife habitat, clean water and wild places for people to find adventure and solace. Today’s debate about the future of these mountains stands on this legacy, and for that we are deeply grateful. These mountains are among the wildest places left in the lower 48. As veterans of earlier efforts to protect the Gallatin and Madison Ranges, we support the Greater Yellowstone Conservation and R...

  • Column: The political ads have taken over the television

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Sep 4, 2024

Whenever our household budget has gotten tight over the near decade of living in Montana, one topic that always seems to come up is getting rid of our satellite service and finding a different and cheaper way to watch television. Our bill would keep growing, and we would call them to say we’d like to cancel. They’d end up giving us a discount for a few months, only to have the high prices return after it ended. It was a never-ending cycle. I still think I’m still trying to recover financially from the year we thought it would be a good idea to...

  • Three Forks football opens season with big-time win over Missoula Loyola

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Sep 4, 2024

The Three Forks High School Football team set the tone early, scoring on their opening drive, and would never trail in an impressive 28-13 win over Missoula Loyola on August 30 at Bobcat Stadium at the Montana State University Campus in Bozeman. The Wolves wasted little time scoring, with sophomore quarterback Kanon Reichman finding the endzone on a five-yard scoring run. A successful two-point conversion on a pass from Reichman to Dylan Andersen would put Three Forks up 8-0 with 9:02 left in... Full story

  • Securing attractants can reduce conflicts with wildlife

    Sep 4, 2024

Many conflicts with wildlife stem from unsecured garbage, food and other attractants in human-occupied areas. Wildlife commonly travel through urban areas in southwestern Montana. Wildlife, including bears, that become conditioned to seeking and obtaining food from humans quickly lose their wariness of humans and their interest in foraging for natural food items. This happens when they find human sources of food like garbage, bird feeders, pet food and other attractants stored in unsecured places around homes and neighborhoods. Most recently,...
