The proposed facility was initially brought to the attention of area residents at public meetings in May and August 2023. The project to replace the two bridges on Old Town Road near Three Forks is still going through the Section 106 Process, intended to mitigate the removal of historic property. Last week, the Broadwater County Commission received an update on the project from Adam Hagel of Stahly Engineering at a meeting at the Headwaters Livestock Auction in Three Forks. Hagel told the commission that the Section 106 Process, undertaken by the Army Corps of Engineers, Montana State Historic Preservation Office,...

Annual fishing closures began Oct. 1 for sections of the Big Hole, Ruby and Beaverhead rivers to protect trout during spawning seasons. The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission adopted new regulations last year in response to struggling fish populations in the three rivers. These restrictions limit fall and spring angling during trout spawning season in some stretches of the rivers. Some flow-related fishing closures remain in effect for the rest of the Big Hole River. Thus the entire Big Hole River is closed to fishing at this time. Flow-relat...
Drive through downtown Bozeman any day of the week, and you're guaranteed to see some cowboy hats. Turn on the television and there's another Montana politician wearing the hat. On Instagram, it's billionaires with boots and buckles. Stetson even had a hat shortage from demand on the back of the success of "Yellowstone" and the Barbie movie. Meanwhile, the cowboy is dying. This is not a new observation. And it's not the fault of 99% of folks wearing the boots, buckles and hats that family farms...
While I was in elementary school, the end of summer always meant going school shopping, and this always meant searching for a new lunch box. Lunch boxes have certainly evolved over the years, but they pale in comparison to the novelty of those from my childhood. I remember being so excited to get a “Return of the Jedi” lunch box with a Thermos that I’m pretty sure I slept with it for about a week. As much as getting a lunch box was a rite of passage for a 1980s elementary school student, taking a lunch usually only lasted about a week. I would...
The Three Forks High School Football team moved to 5-1 on the season with an impressive 32-14 road win on October 4 at Townsend. "I'm proud of our guys. They battled all night and executed the game plan on both sides of the ball. Townsend isn't an easy place to play, and our kids brought the right mindset from the start," said Head Coach Connor Sullivan. "As a team, everyone did their job well and executed." After a loss in the conference opener on September 27 at Boulder, Sullivan said he...

In addition to a slate of federal and statewide races, Montana voters next month will be asked to weigh in on a pair of proposed amendments to the state Constitution rewriting the very process by which they choose their elected officials. Taken together, Constitutional Initiatives 126 and 127 would amend the Montana Constitution to alter the face of even-year elections from start to finish. CI-126 would jettison the state's separate party June primaries in favor of a single multi-party primary...

While an hour-long frost delay pushed back the start of last Friday's Headwaters Invitational, it did not slow down the Three Forks High School Cross Country team's outstanding performances. Competing in front of home fans, the Wolves had numerous PRs at the event held on October 4 at the Headwaters Golf Course. "It was a great day. We love this meet for PRs and confidence," Head Coach Tara Forsberg said. On the boys' side, Three Forks was led by senior Cass Violett, who finished second with a...
As the climate in the American West becomes increasingly arid and drought stress becomes more common, agricultural producers are seeking to understand how crops weather those warmer and drier trends across Montana's rangelands. A postdoctoral researcher in Montana State University's Department of Ecology is exploring some of those questions by delving into the microbial communities in rangeland grasses and how they respond to heat stress and drought. Hannah Goemann arrived at MSU in 2017 to...
I have been heard as saying that I do not have to defend life, you have to defend taking it, but CI128 has changed that. I feel obligated to defend it now. CI128, the abortion initiative as a constitutional right and the vagueness and simplicity of its wording leaves the door wide open for unimaginable harm and tragic attacks and loss to human life. Let me explain. Just recently, our Montana Supreme Court, yes yours and mine, was tasked with determining what Article ll Section 10 of our constitution, giving us the right to privacy, actually mea...
