A magical season for the Three Forks High School Cross Country team ended with some incredible results at last Saturday's MHSA Class B State Meet in Missoula. For the second straight year, the Wolves boys' team finished in second place, ending the race with a total of 112 points, only behind state champion St. Ignatius who finished with 63. A task force charged with identifying solutions for Montana's housing crunch formally passed recommendations for legislative action to Gov. Greg Gianforte Wednesday, teeing up debates over state subsidies and local control that appear likely to play out as specific housing bills are considered by lawmakers this winter. The group, appointed by the governor in July, had been asked to recommend measures that could be implemented by the Legislature to reduce the burden placed on many Montanans by... Full story
It should be an excellent time for shopping this Saturday, October 29, in Three Forks, with close to 60 vendors anticipated at the Great Harvest Bazaar. After a successful inaugural event in 2020, organizer Brooke McLees is looking forward to this year's event scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Three Forks High School. "I am super excited about this year's bazaar. Last year went well; we had about 50 vendors and good attendance. This year we are looking at close to 60 vendors, everything from... Full story
The annual Three Forks Chamber of Commerce Trick or Treat on Main event should be a fantastic time for local children this Halloween. The event is scheduled to take place on Monday, October 31, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Three Forks. "We are very excited to help facilitate this fun tradition. Some of the businesses have been strategically buying candy throughout the year. There should be some good stuff for the trick-or-treaters," Chamber Treasurer Ranee Berg said. Businesses participatin... Full story
Like the local population, Three Forks School District’s student enrollment has been on the rise and in an attempt to prevent overcrowding, the school board has moved forward with a policy which will close the district to new out-of-district student applications. The decision to no longer accept nonresident students comes after the approval of a bond project which funded both an elementary and high school expansion. Since construction has continued through the start of the school year, the district has operated with limited space for its 804 st...
The Clean Water Act turned 50 on October 18th. Over the past five decades, it has proven itself as one of the most successful environmental laws on the books. It has cleaned up contaminated waterways, helped to assure that the drinking water coming out of your tap is safe for your kids, and protected the ecological integrity of rivers and streams. Indeed, without the Clean Water Act, Montana would not be the state it is today. But far more must be done in order for us to reach the promise of the Clean Water Act – which is to prevent, reduce, a...
I’ve been trying not to spend too much time on social media. If I’m online for more than a few minutes, it starts to hamper my productivity and raises my anxiety levels, which I don’t need at this point in my life. One of the double-edged swords of social media is the “memory” or “on this day” features which can share a fond memory or absolutely tear your heart apart seeing a photo of a lost friend or family member. The other day was a positive “memory” that took me back to one of the weirdest evenings of my life. In 2010, my dear friend Brad i...
Southwest Montana hunters can help prevent the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) by properly disposing of game animal carcasses at three locations across Gallatin County this hunting season. Dumping carcasses is illegal, unethical, and can spread numerous diseases, including CWD, a fatal disease of deer, elk, and moose. The Gallatin Solid Waste Management District is proud to assist Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks by providing safe places to dispose of game animal carcasses. In southwest... Full story
Early-summer moisture and unstrained resources for aggressive suppression conspired to deliver a more muted fire season than had been expected in spring. But in hindsight, meteorologists and land managers view summer 2022 as an outlier. Multiple factors led to a relatively light load for firefighters and Montanans' lungs, but hotter and drier climate trends that portend increasing wildfire intensity are still in store for the future. Heading into the season, all the elements were in place for a... Full story

Jennifer Carlson is doing an exemplary job serving MT House District 69 (Manhattan and Three Forks) and should be reelected. I have never met a political candidate I have wanted to support more. As a young, married mom, I feel Carlson represents me, my family, and my district so well as she was dedicated wife, mother, and homeschool teacher for many years. Rarely do you find a candidate anymore that has lived such a normal life yet desired to take a stand and do more. Carlson has proven herself to be fighter for personal liberty and I value...
Dear Editor/Broadwater County Voters, I am writing my final letter to the editor for this election. I want to thank each and every person that has donated, reached out, and helped spread the word. I am humbled by all the support. I would like to summarize all of my previous letters. To start I would like to go over my experience. I have been in Law Enforcement for 14 years. I started my career out in the Broadwater County Detention Center. I then went to the Meagher County Sheriff’s Office for five years. After that I worked for the Jefferson C...
Letter to the Editor I am writing in support of Rocky Hamilton, a true servant leader, for HD 69. As a Manhattan Police Sergeant, he passed up his own raise to make sure new officers were paid more. Who does this? Only someone that cares more for helping others than helping himself. Rocky is an integral part of our community whether it’s volunteering at the senior center or supporting the Clarkston Fire Department. What I like best about Rocky is that he listens to all viewpoints and facts before making decisions. He doesn’t come with har...
I’ve been told I am dying and won’t make it through another term and that am currently too physically ill to perform the duties of County Commissioner. I am sorry to disappoint anyone, but I am not physically incapacitated, and I am not dying. Like the other 37 million Americans with kidney impairment, I don’t have the stamina to perform the physical labor I used to do. That’s why my partner, Tate Pool, has stepped up to run Delger Construction. I have only missed two weeks of work since I was diagnosed with igA nephropathy, and that was due...
Montanans have a tradition of working together to build great communities. As life long residents of Gallatin County, Paul and I have witnessed that first hand. We support Rocky Hamilton for HD 69. Rocky has over ten years experience in law enforcement. Rocky is a problem solver listening to individual issues and working to solve existing concerns for the good of the individual and the community. Rocky is a communicator. Rocky will respond back to phone calls, emails and texts from all his constituents. Rocky will carry this experience to the...
With all of the noise in national politics these days it’s easy to forget the importance of local elections, in particular, who we want to represent us in the Montana legislature. In HD 69 we have a choice between extreme right Republican Jennifer Carlson and Democrat Rocky Hamilton. I support Rocky Hamilton because he places people over partisan politics and knows our district well as a public servant. We need a voice who understands us and our concerns and is responsive. Rocky has been talking to our neighbors for months, and really listening...
I am writing as both a former Mayor of the Town of Manhattan and also a member of the Police Commission. I have had the opportunity to know Rocky Hamilton, who is running for Representative of House District 69, for several years. He gained a lot of leadership experience on the Police Force and was promoted to Sergeant of the Manhattan Police Department. He is the type of person we need in the Legislature. He would have some dialog with those on both sides of the aisle and gain a consensus. Rocky is committed to fiscal responsibility of public...

BOZEMAN – Bear specialists and game wardens with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks have responded recently to several separate conflicts involving grizzly bears in southwestern Montana. No people were injured in these conflicts. However, one grizzly bear was euthanized, and several others were relocated. Defensive encounter On Oct. 14, two hunters were walking along Eldridge Trail south of Taylor Creek in the Madison Range. They heard brush breaking and saw a grizzly bear charging at them. Both hunters fired multiple handgun rounds at the bear, an...
