The holiday season is always a time for joy, warmth, and cherished traditions. For many of us in Three Forks, this includes decorating Christmas trees, making a fire in the wood stove, or using space heaters to keep our homes cozy. Later this year, Jesse Swenson will be sworn in as a new member of the Broadwater County Commission. Swenson, who defeated incumbent Darrel Folkvord earlier this month by a vote of 2,392 to 1,937 for the District 3 seat, said he was shocked to learn he had won. “You always hope that you’ll win, but you truly don’t have any inclination of how the election will play out until it’s over,” Swenson said. According to Swenson, his number one priority in starting his tenure would be educating himself on everything that falls on the Commissio... Full story

The Three Forks Chamber of Commerce is seeking a new location for its planned Visitors Information Center. According to Chamber President Leann Bryant, the organization planned to construct the center where they tore down their shed, located near the Headwaters Railroad and Trident Heritage Center. Bryant said that with the construction of the city's new garage, the Chamber no longer has the space it needs, and the area no longer suits them in terms of curb appeal or practicality. "We are...

Each year, families and friends come together to celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November. Over the past few decades, the day following the federal holiday has become synonymous with "Black Friday," as shoppers go in mass to larger stores to get a jumpstart on their holiday shopping. I was young when my parents divorced, and it wasn’t too long after that my mom remarried. While I remember this being quite chaotic, it sure did make for one heck of a Thanksgiving, and that is a big reason why it is up there with my favorite holidays. I’ve heard people sometimes use the word “split” families, which I’m not fond of. It’s just how life goes sometimes, and on Thanksgiving, it allowed me to eat like a king. We would always start Thanksgiving morning a bit earlier than most, often leaving the house before 10 a.m. and heading to...
Montana Department of Revenue staff told a legislative committee last week that next year's reappraisal cycle could produce a partial repeat of last year's jarring tax spike as the state's surging real estate market continues to translate into higher residential taxes. The department expects the market value of the average Montana residential property to be reappraised at 21% higher when it completes next year's reappraisal cycle. A staff economist said Monday that if the Legislature doesn't...

After a three-day workshop in October and a follow-up meeting earlier this month, the River Recreation Advisory Council (RRAC) submitted recommendations to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks for managing river recreation and administering the use of water-related activities. The council members, who were selected by FWP Director Dustin Temple, were tasked with addressing these challenges by developing a set of recommendations for...
