Gallatin Valley Land Trust (GVLT) and Outlaw Partners along with Bridger Development Strategies announced last week, the official opening of 1.5 miles of new trail connecting into the Painted Hills and Highland Glen Nature Preserve trail systems, as well as a new 10-car parking lot. The Sandhill Trail was developed in conjunction with a new residential community by the same name. “We were committed to preserving as much of the natural habitat and riparian areas as possible while enhancing access to outdoor recreation opportunities on the p...
Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) Director Charlie Brereton and Office of Public Instruction (OPI) Superintendent Elsie Arntzen recently announced the launch of a new Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (Summer EBT) program, with more than $9 million in funding reaching qualified families. “The Summer EBT program helps ensure low-income Montana children have access to healthy and nutritious food, and we appreciate the partnership with OPI to help make this program a reality for communities across our state,” Dir. Bre...
Montanans have been dazzled in recent months by colorful displays of the aurora, or northern lights, which occur when plasma and energetic particles ejected by the sun slam into Earth’s atmosphere and clash with the planet’s magnetic field. As spectacular as those light shows have been, Montana State University solar physicist Rachael Filwett says the solar energetic particle, or SEP, events that caused them were insignificant compared to others that have bombarded our planet in the distant past. Those events carried radiation levels dangerous...
The Department of the Interior announced today that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has published proposed updates to strengthen conservation and management of greater sage-grouse habitat on public lands, informed by the best available science, collaborative work with states, and input from local, Tribal and federal partners. The proposed updates, outlined in a final environmental impact statement and amendments to 77 resource management plans, incorporate new sage-grouse conservation...
Montana State University recently opened its Biomedical Innovation for Research and Development Hub, an interdisciplinary training and research site that brings together engineering, nursing and computer science to advance life-saving technologies. Called the BioReD Hub, the program also provides collaborative opportunities for students in research and clinical practice. Funded in part by a $429,000 grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, the hub aims to expand biomedical engineering research and education at MSU with an emphasis on...
The Montana Department of Commerce announced last week an online survey of Montana renters has been launched to gather information to better understand the actual amount of assistance low-income Montanans need to afford housing. “We are asking for your help with an important study to better understand how inflation, the limited supply of rental housing, increased demand, high cost of labor, increases in property insurance rates and other factors have driven up the cost of housing and impacted rental housing throughout Montana,” said Cheryl Coh...
Military challenge coins serve as an easy conversation starter. Some are tokens of time spent overseas, while others are a remembrance of rank or an award. Now, a new set of challenge coins minted by the state of Montana - and designed by a Montana State University student - are intended to aid in preventing suicide among veterans. Dubbed 988+1 suicide prevention coins, the coins will be distributed to veterans across the state in an attempt to lower the suicide rate among that population. This...
Republicans will continue holding strong majorities in both chambers of the Montana Legislature when next year’s session starts in January but will no longer have a veto-proof supermajority after Democrats picked up a handful of seats following redistricting and Tuesday’s election. While Tuesday’s election results are not yet finalized, tentative results with about 560,000 votes counted statewide show Democrats picking up two seats overall in the Senate and nine in the House. That would put Republicans at a 32-18 majority in the Senate and a...

The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office has made an arrest in the murder of former Three Forks resident Dustin Kjersem. At a press conference on October 31, Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer announced that 41-year-old Daren Christopher Abbey had confessed and was arrested for the killing that took place in October in the Moose Creek area near Big Sky. Abbey, who is in custody at the Gallatin County Detention Center in Bozeman, has been charged with one count of deliberate homicide and two counts... Full story
Fire season in Montana still has not ended. Thirty-five fires continue to burn across the state, though the combined acreage makes up a small amount of the total burned this season. A continued drought in the east will help maintain fire-prone conditions through early November, though Monday night brought precipitation and cooler temperatures to western Montana, according to Dan Zumpfe, a meteorologist based in Missoula for the National Weather Service. "Certainly for western Montana, it looks...
The City of Three Forks officially launched a new look on its website. According to City officials, it's been eight years since the last update, and the former site wasn't providing the best experience for the end user. They hope the new site will enhance user experience and help minimize clicking into downloaded PDFs or digging deep within pages to find items. City Clerk Crystal Turner said the changes at www.threeforksmontana.com went live on October 30, and the transition should be seamless....
The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the Western Transportation Institute at Montana State University a grant to assist workforce development in the railway sector across the state of Montana. The $6.4 million grant is part of an infrastructure initiative funded by the DOT’s Federal Railroad Administration and announced on Oct. 29. The award is part of a $2.4 billion rail-improvement law that funds 122 projects in 41 states and Washington, D.C. The infrastructure initiative, which is administered through FRA’s Consolidated Rai...
A U.S. Forest Service budget shortfall appears likely to force some of the centers that produce the avalanche forecasts relied upon by Montana's backcountry skiers and snowmobilers to scale back their operations this winter. The possibility has drawn concern from a coalition of recreation-oriented groups, which sent a letter earlier this month urging the agency to fully staff the 14 avalanche centers USFS administers across the nation, three of which serve portions of Montana. The group wrote...
Governor Greg Gianforte and Department of Labor & Industry (DLI) Commissioner Sarah Swanson last week announced a new pilot program to hire and train veterans with disabilities to operate heavy construction equipment from a remote and accessible location. "We have a responsibility to support those who have served our country," Gov. Gianforte said. "Through this grant, we are empowering veterans with good-paying jobs and helping them transition after a life of service. I'm proud to join DLI in...
Conservative groups are working to undermine support for Montana’s Medicaid expansion in hopes the state will abandon the program. The rollback would be the first in the decade since the Affordable Care Act began allowing states to cover more people with low incomes. Montana’s expansion, which insures roughly 78,800 people, is set to expire next year unless the legislature and governor opt to renew it. Opponents see a rare opportunity to eliminate Medicaid expansion in one of the 40 states that have approved it. The Foundation for Government Ac...
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, along with partners at the Heart of the Rockies Initiative, will be working over the next five years to help landowners proactively reduce conflicts with grizzly bears using nearly $12 million in federal funds. FWP has been awarded nearly $5 million in Department of Interior funding from a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant. This new funding complements more than $6 million provided by a Regional Conservation Partnership Program grant from the U.S. Department Agriculture’s Natural Resources and C...
Chronic wasting disease was recently detected in an elk on the north end of the Ruby Mountains in Hunting District 322. CWD is a contagious neurological disease that infects mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk and moose. It's always fatal, and there is no known cure. It was first detected in Montana’s wild herds in 2017. A hunter harvested the CWD-positive elk adjacent to the lower Ruby Valley, where CWD has been observed at high prevalence locally in both white-tailed and mule deer. While this is the first time CWD has been detected in elk in t...
