A grizzly bear was captured and euthanized earlier this month after repeatedly seeking and accessing unsecured attractants in Big Sky. Over the course of several weeks, the bear became accustomed to accessing garbage stored in bear-resistant containers that were not secured. The bear also found unsecured food in a vehicle. Attempts to haze the bear after attractants were stored properly and secured with electric fencing were unsuccessful. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks staff captured the bear... Full story

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks recently completed extensive public opinion surveys of elk and deer hunters in Montana to gauge their satisfaction with hunting and harvest opportunities. Overall, 73 percent of the respondents from this survey are satisfied with elk management in Montana. Generally, hunters surveyed were also satisfied with current elk hunting regulations and support the...
Federal regulators are urging Montana health officials to fix shortcomings in the state's Medicaid redetermination process, expressing "concerns" that the state may be disenrolling people who are eligible for the public health insurance and creating barriers for others through long wait times at call centers and during the application process. The state began reassessing the eligibility of the more than 320,000 people on Montana Medicaid in April with the lifting of the federally-designated... Full story
Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen this week joined 20 other attorneys general urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to scrap a proposed rule that seeks to dramatically decrease carbon dioxide emissions in the energy sector. In a 55-page letter dated Aug. 8, the signatories argue that a rule the Biden administration unveiled in May amounts to an unlawful overstepping of the EPA’s authority and an attempt to circumvent a 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision. That ruling took a dim view of the executive branch’s efforts to use the Cle...

For Dirty Honey, the COVID pandemic came at a particularly inconvenient point. The group, in 2019, released a self-titled EP that included a history-making single, "When I'm Gone." With that song, Dirty Honey became the first-ever unsigned, independent band to have a Mainstream Rock Songs No. 1 single. The band was heading into a busy 2020 expecting to stay on the road building on the momentum of that hit song while also hitting the studio to record their debut full-length album. The pandemic... Fishing restrictions and closures on several streams in southwest Montana were lifted on August 4 because of cool temperatures and rain. This includes the hoot owl restrictions on the lower Beaverhead River, four sections on the Big Hole River, the lower Gallatin River, Jefferson River, the lower Madison River and Ruby River. This also includes lifting the full closure on the Madison below Ennis Dam. Fishing restrictions, such as hoot owl restrictions and full fishing closures, are designed to p... Full story
The Gallatin County Commission voted last week to finalize American Rescue Plan Act funding for the Three Forks Area Ambulance Service. According to Commissioner Scott MacFarlane, TFAA approached the governing body in late 2020, stating they needed some matching dollars to help purchase a new ambulance. MacFarlane said the cost of emergency equipment has gotten really expensive, and last week they approved the piece of equipment TFAA bought through a sub-recipient. "So that was good to do for... Three women were injured by an otter last week while floating on the Jefferson River. At about 8:15 p.m. on August 2., the three women were floating on inner tubes about 3 miles upstream from Sappington Bridge when they observed one or two otters. An otter approached and attacked them. The women got out of the water, and the otter swam away. The women then called 911, and several agencies responded, including Montana Highway Patrol, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Jefferson Valley Ambulance,... Full story
Amid low trout counts in the Jefferson Basin, Governor Greg Gianforte last week convened a roundtable discussion in Wise River with fishing guides, anglers, irrigators, ag producers, biologists, and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) Director Dustin Temple. "Montana's prized rivers and waterways are a part of what define our way of life and they support the livelihoods of thousands of Montanans," Gov. Gianforte said. "Working together, we can build consensus and solutions to address low...
A new Montana law will provide sweeping legal protections to health care practitioners who refuse to prescribe marijuana or participate in procedures and treatments such as abortion, medically assisted death, gender-affirming care, or others that run afoul of their ethical, moral, or religious beliefs or principles. The law, which goes into effect in October, will gut patients’ ability to take legal action if they believe they didn’t receive proper care due to a conscientious objection by a provider or an institution, such as a hospital. So-...
Montana’s Department of Administration last week partially restored the Office of Public Instruction’s authority to independently award contracts for third-party goods and services, stating that the agency has made “significant progress” in correcting deficiencies identified earlier this year. The restoration of procurement authority at OPI, which oversees Montana’s K-12 public education system, came on the heels of a second compliance review conducted last month. OPI initially lost its authority to enter into contracts valued above $10,000 i...
