After a couple of months of above normal precipitation across most of Montana, active weather largely slowed down in April. "In typical Montana fashion, last month's weather consisted of a combination of sunny days, winter weather, and rain," said Eric Larson, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Water Supply Specialist. The most notable storm occurred around April 18-22 and delivered 20 to 30 inches of dense snow to upper elevations in the northern Swan Mountains, central... Full story

With the high levels of snow and very warm temperatures this spring, boaters can expect high waters soon. The combination of high water and high expectations can be deadly when conditions are too extreme for safe boating. It can be hard to put safety ahead of adventure when you've spent hours planning a boat trip, but sometimes the only safe choice is to stay off the water. All water users should wear a well-fitted U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device, or life jacket, when on and...

At issue is Senate Bill 442, which proposes to divide tax revenues levied on recreational marijuana sales between the General Fund, county road construction and maintenance, conservation and recreation programs, addiction treatment and veterans...

While the April 15 due date has passed for the yearly licensing of dogs in Three Forks, City officials continue to encourage and stress the importance of getting their pets registered with the municipality. According to City Clerk Crystal Turner, as of last Thursday, there are 156 licensed dogs within City Limits, and she estimates the number could be as high as 800 to 1,000. To license in Three Forks, residents must pay $15 per dog and show they have a current rabies vaccine on record. Turner s... Full story
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking public comment on the proposed award of almost $1.6 million in grant funds to 36 applicants through the Recreational Trails Program (RTP) in 2023. In an effort to make sure Montana farm families and small business owners aren't paying higher costs to send their children to college, U.S. Senator Jon Tester and colleagues from both sides of the aisle introduced the Family Farm and Small Business Exemption Act. In a rural press call last week, Tester said as a farmer, he can say that one fit size policies don't work for Montana's rural communities, and that's why he introduced a bill that will make sure Montana farmers and ranchers don't... Gov. Greg Gianforte is pushing for revisions to a proposed ban on the social media platform TikTok passed by the Legislature this month, suggesting the bill's backers amend its provisions to apply to all social media platforms that allow users' personal data to be provided to nations classified as "foreign adversaries." The change, Gianforte's office has argued, would make the ban easier to defend from court challenges. However, the governor's staff has also told the ban's supporters that he is...
Katie Beall was diagnosed with breast cancer on March 1, 2022. Two days later, doctors told her the chemotherapy she needed would make her infertile. The next day, she started looking into how she could freeze her eggs, which would give her the option of becoming a mother in the future. Twenty-three days after her cancer diagnosis, the 36-year-old Helena resident said, she had put $7,579 on three credit cards to pay for her out-of-pocket fertility preservation costs. Her insurance didn’t cover it. In Montana, fertility preservation for newly d...
With the exception of Eureka, watercraft inspection stations are open. All vehicles transporting any type of boat, including canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and rafts are required to stop at all inspection stations they encounter. Watercraft inspection stations are Montana’s first line of defense to prevent the movement of AIS, which can have devastating impacts on Montana waterways. More than 2,400 watercraft have been inspected so far this year. Of those, 13 boats were found to be transporting invasive mussels. Recently, a pontoon boat was i...
At the Sieben Ranch Block Management Area, Governor Greg Gianforte last week signed a bill to double the payment cap for landowners increasing public access through Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) Block Management Program. "Thanks to generous landowners like the Baucus family participating in Block Management, Montanans have access to millions of acres of private land to hunt," Gov. Gianforte said. "Today, we're investing in the success of this program for years to come for the benefit...
