Along with the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), Governor Greg Gianforte last week announced a record-setting oil and gas lease sale on state trust lands, totaling $2.85 million in revenue. “We’ll continue to ramp up American-made energy in Montana to make our state and nation energy independent and secure,” Gov. Gianforte said. “All the while, we’ll prioritize additional revenues from these oil and gas lease sales for the benefit our schools and to ensure our kids have access to the best education possible....
Montana lawmakers this month have trained a critical eye on funding for public schools, proposing new enhancements to the state’s education funding formula and raising concerns about the handling of federal school funds by Montana’s statewide education agency. The latter initially arose last week when state auditors in Helena presented legislators with a scathing report questioning the Montana Office of Public Instruction’s handling of $67.5 million in federal money for Montana schools. Auditors specifically noted that the agency had not maint...
Governor Greg Gianforte last week led a group of five western states in writing a letter to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sounding the alarm about an unfair settlement reached that will have a devastating impact on athletic programs in smaller states. Recently, the NCAA reached a $2.8 billion settlement with Division I student-athletes in the Power Five conferences over backpay owed to them after the organization updated its policies regarding Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) sponsorships. The proposed settlement would...

Two grizzly bears were removed last month due to cattle depredations in southwestern Montana. One bear was killed in the Gravelly Mountains after several instances of sheep depredation. These conflicts happened despite multiple attempts to avoid them, including guard dogs, moving sheep to new areas, and hazing the bear. The second bear was killed on private land in the Paradise Valley south of Livingston after chronic cattle depredations. The landowner moved cows twice, but conflicts continued. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife S...

When developers proposed a five-story apartment complex in midtown Bozeman, they made the city a promise: Half of the 111 units would be earmarked for affordable, below-market-rate housing. Called the Guthrie, the proposed project took advantage of a city policy allowing developers to deviate from height and parking requirements in exchange for building some affordable units. But following public outcry about the building's height and scant 37 parking spaces, the Bozeman city commission nixed...
Sibanye Stillwater, the South African company that operates the nation's only major palladium mine in south-central Montana, said Thursday that it plans to lay off about 40% of its Montana workforce as it scales back its operation in an effort to offset losses caused by low metal prices. In a letter to workers, U.S. Executive Vice President Kevin Robertson said the company will halt mining at the west section of its Stillwater mine southwest of Columbus until prices rise. It also plans to...
Earthquakes that rupture the ground surface leave behind the telltale signature of fault scarps, which provide clues about seismic activity in the geologic past. A new study focused on scarps along the East Gallatin-Reese Creek fault system will provide more information on seismic hazards in northwest Yellowstone National Park. Studying earthquakes and their associated hazards is an important part of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory's mission. Earthquakes are among Yellowstone's geologic...
