Under the Big Sky, this is the season many of us spend the whole year looking forward to. In the following forecasts, FWP outlines what hunters can expect for deer, elk and pronghorn seasons around the state. We also have a fairly in-depth upland game bird forecast. Along with this great information, we have some tips on being safe in bear country and the importance of being good stewards when hunting on private lands. Destination:...

    Sep 11, 2024

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is looking to purchase an easement to 86.4 acres of state land near Logan to explore upgrading the existing shooting area and build a more formal and safe shooting range. The FWP is proposing to acquire the 2 Dog Road Easement from the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC). Last week, the FWP released an environmental assessment (EA) for public comment on the proposed easement acquisition. The acquisition would encompass an area south of...

  • Montana FWP wins final claim in elk management lawsuit

    Amanda Eggert, Montana Free Press|Sep 11, 2024

A state district court judge has issued a final order in a dispute over Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks' approach to elk management. Tenth Judicial District Court Judge Gregory Todd ruled Friday that FWP and the Fish and Wildlife Commission have considered the concerns of private landowners and managed for a sustainable elk population. The order dispenses with the last remaining claim United Property Owners of Montana raised in a lawsuit it filed against the state in 2022. UPOM, a membership-ba...

  • Supreme Court lifts lower court hold on two pro-construction housing laws

    Eric Dietrich, Montana Free Press|Sep 11, 2024

The Montana Supreme Court has overturned a lower court order temporarily suspending two pro-construction housing laws passed by the 2023 Montana Legislature, ruling last week that the laws can take effect as a challenge brought by a Bozeman-based homeowners coalition is litigated. The homeowners, organized as Montanans Against Irresponsible Densification, or MAID, challenged the bills and two other housing measures last year, arguing the Legislature's efforts to promote infill development by...

  • Governor Gianforte Highlights Montana's Job and Wage Growth

    Sep 11, 2024

Joining Montana Department of Labor & Industry (DLI) Commissioner Sarah Swanson, Governor Greg Gianforte last week highlighted new data showing the strength of Montana's economy. "When you couple our strong Montana worth ethic with our pro-business, pro-jobs policies, it comes as no surprise to know that Montana's economy is on the move," Gov. Gianforte said. "As evidenced in the pages of this report, Montanans are better equipped to handle still-high inflation thanks to our steady job and wage...

  • Hoot-owl fishing restriction lifted on Madison River upstream of Hebgen Reservoir

    Sep 11, 2024

A hoot-owl fishing restriction on the Madison River upstream of Hebgen Reservoir has been lifted thanks to recent cooler water temperatures. The restriction had been in place since July 10 for the river between Hebgen Reservoir and the Yellowstone National Park boundary. Other fishing restrictions and closures may be in effect in other waterbodies. All fishing is prohibited during full fishing closures. Hoot-owl restrictions prohibit fishing from 2 p.m. to midnight daily. Fishing restrictions and closures like these are designed to protect...

  • Missing out on mule deer

    Amanda Eggert, Montana Free Press|Sep 11, 2024

Grassy, sagebrushy and only occasionally interrupted by sandstone buttes or clumps of pine trees, southeastern Montana has long drawn mule deer hunters from across the state and region. As recently as 2017, Hunters have harvested more than 17,000 mule deer from this region per year, filling their freezers with venison and adding to the tills of local businesses that guide, feed and lodge them. These days, though, it's almost easier to find elk on public land than it is to spot a mule deer in...
