A wind-driven wildland fire that erupted off of Madison Road on August 21, 2024, has been successfully contained thanks to the coordinated efforts of multiple fire agencies and resources. Firefighters responded promptly to reports of a large fire moving rapidly to the north due to strong winds. Initial units on scene, including 14-24, 14-22, 14-21, 4-1, and Tender 4-8, began establishing a wet line along Dyke Road on the east side of the fire. Despite their efforts, the fire's interior was...
For the second time in as many months, a state district court judge has sided with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and hunting groups in a lawsuit over elk management. The dispute relates to a 2003 law directing Fish, Wildlife and Parks to manage elk “at or below” the sustainable populations established in the state’s elk management plan. Two years ago, the United Property Owners of Montana, a membership-based nonprofit that promotes its members’ business interests, sued FWP, arguing that swelling elk populations have damaged its members...

Recent cooler temperatures allowed hoot-owl fishing restrictions to be lifted August 24 on the entire Smith River and Jefferson River and on the Madison River from Ennis Dam to the NorthWestern Energy powerhouse. The restrictions were put in place earlier this summer. Hoot-owl restrictions are designed to protect fish that become more susceptible to disease and mortality when low flows and high-water temperatures combine with other stressors, including catch-and-release fishing. Anglers can reduce stress on fish at all times of the year by...

In February 2023, the City of Three Forks started updating its 2006 Capital Improvements Plan (CIP). At last week’s City Council meeting, the governing body took the final steps in the official approval when they voted unanimously to adopt the new CIP, a prioritized list of infrastructure projects with a schedule and funding sources. Before the vote, Councilmember Garret Buchanan said the CIP is a good road map for the City of Three Forks. “I think it’s nice to have a road map when we don’t know what to do next. It’s very well put together,... Full story
During a public hearing on the preliminary budget for the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 at last week’s Three Forks City Council meeting, Councilmember Gene Townsend discussed the possibility of paving Railway Avenue. Townsend said Railway Avenue is probably the third busiest street in Three Forks, with many people using it to go to the market and post office. “There is a lot of traffic on it. It constantly needs to be graded. It’s a tough street to take care of,” he said. According to Townsend, the City of Three Forks has gas tax money and other money... Full story

According to Sheriff Nick Rauser, they are currently investigating the recent case involving $100 bills. He encouraged businesses to be extra vigilant and mindful of all cash. Rauser said the issue is something his office sees too often. "It isn't very rare, unfortunately. We see it at all businesses across the county," he said. For more information about how to authenticate money...

Montana hunters were recently notified if they successfully drew an antelope license for the upcoming season. The number of licenses drawn in each hunting district were based on recommendations Fish, Wildlife & Parks' biologists made after they completed aerial surveys of antelope herds during the last few weeks. Surveys showed that antelope populations are stable in most regions, with some increases in particular hunting districts. FWP determines the number of licenses issued for each antelope...

Greg Gianforte on Thursday listened to recommendations for property tax reform presented by members of his appointed task force while offering limited insight into his support or disapproval of specific proposals that will likely be debated in the upcoming legislative session. During the 20-minute meeting in the governor's wing of the Capitol building in Helena, Gianforte generally praised the group's final report and its efforts since it first convened in February. "I charged the task...
