  • May storm improves outlook, but drought concerns persist following warm, dry winter

    Amanda Eggert, Montana Free Press|May 15, 2024

Last week's widespread, wet storm has brought a measure of relief to parts of Montana reeling from one of the driest winters on record, but water managers say it's too early to tell how much of that water will stick around to sustain streams, crops and forests through the hottest months of the year. "I think it's fair to say that despite the pins and needles we've been on after that dry November and December, conditions this May are greatly improved from the last three [Mays]," said Michael...

  • Low Snow Year in Montana Results in Below Normal Water Supply Forecasts for the Upcoming Season

    May 15, 2024

Well above normal precipitation during April was needed given the meager snowpack conditions experienced this year. Total monthly precipitation was above normal last month only in the Powder and Tongue River basins but was not widespread across Montana. "A couple mid-month storms did provide significant snowfall, but April is typically a wet month in Montana, and total precipitation last month did not meet that standard," said Eric Larson, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)...

Estimates from two of the four sampling areas are completed, showing several increases in trout numbers from historic lows last year. In the Melrose section, which is immediately downstream of Salmon Fly Fishing Access Site, biologists found an estimated 192 rainbow trout per mile and 506 brown trout per mile. These figures are increases from 2023 estimates, which were 161...

  • Wildlife Management Areas open May 15

    May 15, 2024

Most of Montana’s 76 Wildlife Management Areas open at noon on Wednesday, May 15. The long winter and heavy snowpack have left a limited area for wildlife to forage. With grizzly bear activity increasing, people visiting WMAs should remain vigilant and practice techniques to avoid surprise encounters. Bears, elk and shed-antler hunters will be sharing the same space. Most animals see, hear and smell humans long before humans detect the presence of animals. Depending on the distance between the animals and humans, the animals decide whether t...

The Montana Supreme Court has sided with the state's Department of Natural Resources and Conservation in a dispute involving a 64-year-old water right that's used to irrigate both private and public land. In a unanimous opinion authored by Justice Beth Baker, the court ruled that the state retains an ownership interest in a water right first claimed in 1960 by John Schutter of Gallatin County. "Though not common, grizzly bear sightings around central Montana have increased over the years," said FWP Region 6 Supervisor Drew Henry. "This emphasizes the need to practice bear aware...
