The Three Forks School District was placed in a temporary lockdown last week. According to Sheriff Dan Springer, on March 14, the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office received information about a school threat made through social media that involved several locations around the state. “Information was received locally that involved the Three Forks School District. Last year, during a dispute with Gov. Greg Gianforte over the state's "95 mill" school equalization property tax, officials with 49 of Montana's 56 counties chose to reduce their fall tax bills against the wishes of the Montana Department of Revenue. This month, after landing on the losing side of a November Montana Supreme Court ruling, those counties' treasurers are left with the thankless task of sending supplemental property tax bills to hundreds of thousands of property owners across the...
As Montana's multi-month review of Medicaid eligibility comes to a close, the state health department is disclosing more details about how many children, older adults and Native Americans have lost health coverage over the last year, and how the redetermination process has impacted specific counties. The latest release of information came in response to a public records request filed in January by Democratic lawmakers. The minority party has repeatedly critiqued how the administration of Gov....
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks staff, in cooperation with Montana State University, have begun tagging trout in the Big Hole, Beaverhead, Ruby and Madison rivers. This tagging effort is part of ongoing research that aims to address trout declines and fish health concerns in the upper Missouri River Basin. Staff plan to tag fish each year for the next three years. With help from anglers, these tags will help researchers identify individual fish and monitor their health, survival, movement and...
CLARKSTON – Fairweather Fishing Access Site has reopened. The site was closed temporarily starting in January due to ice jams and flooding. Recreationists are encouraged to use caution when visiting rivers because of unseen hazards, as well as flow and ice conditions that can change suddenly. For m...

On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, just before 1:00 PM, a pair of backcountry skiers were ascending the northern ridge of Mt. Blackmore near Hyalite Reservoir when they triggered a substantial avalanche. One individual was able to escape the slide by sprinting across the slope out of the path, but the other skier was engulfed and carried more than 250 ft downhill and suffered a significant leg injury. The uninjured skier immediately initiated a beacon search and was able to find his partner at the surface near the bottom of the avalanche path. He was...

Following a slow start to winter, recent precipitation has been welcomed across Montana. "February kicked off with a region wide winter storm that brought one to two inches of precipitation to the region, and while there were a couple periods of warm and sunny weather, precipitation was relatively consistent last month," said Eric Larson, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Water Supply Specialist. Precipitation totals for the month of February were as high as 150-200% of normal a...
In a laboratory in Montana State University's Harrison Hall, biomechanics graduate student Isaac Burgess counts down from three before pressing a button to bring a large treadmill to a stop. Ty Wiberg, a sophomore studying community health who is a para Nordic skiing athlete with the nearby Crosscut Mountain Sports Center team, had been double-poling – moving his two skiing poles in a parallel motion at the same time – to ski on the treadmill. Now, he slows his double-poling to mirror the speed...
A wave of major budget cuts is hitting public schools across the state - a situation officials from four of Montana's largest districts attribute to declining enrollment, inflexibilities in the state's school funding formula, and a funding cliff facing schools as pandemic-era federal relief money runs out. District leaders from the Helena, Great Falls, Bozeman and Missoula public schools, meeting with reporters in Helena Friday, also said increased property values and the rising cost of living in the state are major factors impacting their...
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will host public meetings in each region to gather input for the 2025-26 fishing regulations. The meeting for Region 3 is scheduled for March 28 at 6 p.m. at 1400 South 19th Street in Bozeman. Fishing regulations are now under a process like hunting regulations, going through a comprehensive public review every two years. Fishing regulations are printed during odd numbered years. FWP’s proposed regulation changes will be posted online later this month. FWP will also accept and review fishing regulations changes p...
A Lewis and Clark County district court judge last week denied a request from Gov. Greg Gianforte to stay enforcement of a prior order directing him to allow lawmakers to override his veto of a 2023 marijuana tax revenue bill. Judge Mike Menahan’s ruling on March 5 does not guarantee that lawmakers will be able to override Gianforte’s veto of Senate Bill 442, legislation that allocated tax revenues from marijuana sales to conservation, veterans and county infrastructure programs. But it does start a 14-day clock for the governor and the Mon...
