  • Judge: Constitution says the Legislature's veto override power exists 'regardless of the timing of the veto'

    Arren Kimbel-Sannit, Montana Free Press|Jan 24, 2024

Lawmakers may soon have an opportunity to override Gov. Greg Gianforte's veto of a popular bill that sorts out how Montana spends its marijuana tax revenue. Lewis and Clark County District Court Judge Mike Menahan's order last week doesn't necessarily mean that the 2023 Legislature's Senate Bill 442 will become law. But it does provide clarity on a thorny constitutional issue that arose on the final day of the legislative session: The governor cannot veto a bill in a way that denies the... Full story

  • Do you earn tips? Montana now taxes them.

    Eric Dietrich, Montana Free Press|Jan 24, 2024

Among several changes to Montana’s income tax system that took effect at the beginning of the year is a provision that makes income from tips subject to state taxes. The shift aligns Montana with the federal tax system, in which tips have long been taxed alongside salaries and wages. It also means that many service-sector workers will likely have their state income tax obligation increased by hundreds of dollars a year. The change was made by the 2021 Legislature as part of Senate Bill 399, a comprehensive reform measure that reshaped many p... Full story

  • Governor Gianforte Launches Property Tax Task Force

    Jan 24, 2024

Earlier this month, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte launched a property tax task force to provide recommendations to reform the property tax system and reduce the burden on property taxpayers. “Property taxes are too high. Our $1,350 property tax rebate helped Montana homeowners last year and will help them again this year,” Gov. Gianforte said. “We, however, need thoughtful, deliberate, long-term reforms to keep property taxes as low as possible, because the increasing strain of rising property taxes shouldn’t force Montana homeowners to cons...

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jan 17, 2024

During the first reading of an ordinance making changes to the Police Regulation/Animal Control Code, the Three Forks City Council voted unanimously last week to edit the definitions for “Doggy Day Cares” and “Kennels.” The governing body voted to edit the definitions so that neither a Doggy Day Care nor Kennel would be allowed in City Limits. Council member Gene Townsend said having a kennel in town limits is a bad idea and said the barking would go on during the night and weekends. The Council approved the first reading of the ordinan... Full story

  • Sub-Zero Shift: Vigilance Urged Amidst Potential Ice Jam Flooding

    Jan 17, 2024

Despite the initial warmth experienced earlier this winter, Montana is now grappling with a prolonged period of sub-zero temperatures and arctic cold fronts. This abrupt shift serves as a timely reminder that weather patterns can change unexpectedly, necessitating vigilance and awareness of potential ice jam flooding. Ice jam flooding, a phenomenon prevalent along Montana’s rivers and streams, occurs when sub-zero temperatures precede sudden warm-ups, typically from now until March. Additionally, spring breakup can trigger ice jams as t... Full story
