Russell Calvert Green

Russell Calvert Green, age 87 of Bozeman, went to drive the big semi (“boop boop”) in the sky on May 21, 2023.

Russ was born to Gail Green and Lydia Bennett Green in Bozeman where he also spent most of his youth.

Russ was a self-made man who worked and played hard his whole life. He hiked Hollowtop Mountain at age 70. He was in the National Guard in Bozeman and Butte from 1958-1965. He married Sandi Duncan July 3, 1962, at which time he worked for the city of Bozeman. They then moved to Butte where he managed Pacific Hide & Fur for 10 years. While in Butte his two children Jack and Lynette were born. With a summer home and roots established in Pony and a family in tow, it was a natural move in 1972 to Harrison where they purchased the gas station and motel. This was also the beginning of Green’s Contracting. He built roads, put in bridges, dug graves and septic systems and some jobs may have involved a little too much dynamite! He was the man for the job! In 1975 they moved to Pony where the work side of his focus was his contracting business which evolved more into trucking. The play side took advantage of the outdoors as he was an avid hunter, fisherman and snowmobiler (which he raced). He loved testing the limits of a four-wheel drive in the mountains. He was also into competition pistol shooting with his brother Richard and they were quite successful at. In 1991 they purchased the “Kettle Wrench” in Cardwell with plans of retiring and raising a few cows. After his stroke in 2017 he started gravitating back to Bozeman camping in his brother, Ron’s yard and eventually buying the house next door in 2021.

Russ was proceeded in death by his father Gail Green, mother Lydia Christensen, brothers Richard Green and Bill Christensen, and sister Mary Hippert.

Surviving family include his wife Sandi, son, Jack (Genny) Green, Spokane, WA, daughter, Lynette Green, Cardwell, MT, brothers, Ron Green, Bozeman MT and Jay (Joanne) Christensen, Townsend, MT. Eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews and very importantly, his loyal dog “Chico”.

You could have written a book on his accomplishments and stories and people he was acquainted with. I can’t recall traveling anywhere that we didn’t run into someone he knew.
