Greetings, Southwest
Montana,
My name is Ray Shaw, a proud Vietnam Vet, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for Senate Seat 35. This district encompasses Madison, Beaverhead, and parts of Jefferson, Gallatin and Silver Bow Counties.
As a fifth-generation resident of the Ruby Valley, I come from a ranching background that runs deep in our community. Southwest Montana boasts a wealth of opportunities, from our thriving agricultural sector to our abundant natural resources, outdoor recreation, world-class fly fishing, and rich history. Tourism, too, plays a pivotal role in sustaining our local economy.
My tenure serving House District 71 over four terms was a privilege and an honor, but also speaks to my legislative experience, which I feel is vital for being an effective Senator on day one. Throughout my time, several key initiatives were close to my heart, and my focus will remain on:
• Advocating for and securing state and federal funding for the Southwest Montana Veterans Home in Butte, a cause deeply rooted in my own experience as a Vietnam War veteran.
• Successfully navigating the complexities of the CSKT Water Compact.
• Securing funding for crucial infrastructure projects in historic locales like Virginia City and Nevada City to preserve our invaluable heritage.
• Continue to secure funding for essential environmental projects much like I did for the Granite Creek Bridge Project and the Jefferson Slough Restoration, addressing issues like milfoil infestation.
• Recognizing the paramount importance of education, particularly in nurturing our youth and supporting initiatives like the Youth Challenge Program at Western Montana College.
• Focusing on healthcare, including the continued viability of programs like Medicaid, the Help Act, and mental health support.
• As a member of the Madison County housing board, I understand the need for balance between economic development and affordable housing.
• Working with the FWP on wolf management, which is critical for our ranchers.
Additionally, my appointment by Governor Gianforte to serve as the commissioner for Montana's MIC3 underscores my commitment to supporting military families and ensuring access to quality education for their children. In 2018 I was awarded the Distinguished Patriot Award from the Adjutant General at the Montana Youth Challenge Academy, one of the highest honors a civilian can receive. What an honor!
I aim to be a steadfast advocate for our communities. I firmly believe in supporting our law enforcement, first responders, local businesses, and organizations like 4-H and FFA.
Veterans' concerns will always remain a top priority for me, alongside the pressing need for tax reform to alleviate the burden on hardworking Montanans.
Drawing on my extensive experience navigating legislative processes and working across agencies, I'm prepared to prioritize the needs and concerns of Senate District 35 with diligence and integrity.
Your voice matters deeply to me, and I encourage you to reach out with your thoughts, concerns, and ideas. Together, we can work towards a brighter future for Southwest Montana.
Thank you for considering me as your candidate, and let's make every day a great Montana Day!
Warm regards,
Ray L. Shaw
