The Three Forks Community Library 2024 Summer Reading Program will kick off on June 7 at 1 p.m. with signups and a special appearance from Smokey the Bear.
Library Assistant Laura Brewer said the staff is excited about this year's program.
"We look forward to this time of year and have so much fun planning the events and activities to encourage kids to keep reading during the summer months to prevent the 'Summer Slide,'" Brewer said.
According to Brewer, the local library participates in the Collaborative Library Summer Program, a nationwide program that promotes interest in reading and library use.
"Each year, there is a national theme, and this year, the theme is 'Adventure Begins at Your Library.' We've decided to expand upon that theme by showing our youngest patrons how the library can be a gateway to learning new ideas," said Brewer. "We have so many fun events planned for 2024. We are going to meet Smokey the Bear, be nature explorers, learn about banking (and reveal a new play area surprise), be mesmerized by a magician, and end it all with an end-of-challenge bash."
The "Nature Explorer Day" is scheduled for June 21 at 1 p.m., the "All about the Bank and Play Area Surprise" is set for July 1 at 1 p.m., the "Magic Show with Kyle Groves" will take place on July 18 at 10 a.m., and the "End of the Summer Reading Program Bash" will round out the schedule on August 9 at 1 p.m.
The summer schedule will also include crafts, the regular story time every Thursday at 10:30 a.m., and Lego Club each Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Brewer said patrons can sign up for the summer reading program starting on June 7 and will be given a reading challenge sheet to track their reading time to earn tickets for prize drawings.
"Summer reading isn't just for kids, but for patrons of all ages. In addition to individual prizes, we have added a community aspect to our summer reading challenge this year. We have partnered with a local bank that has pledged to donate $1 for each completed week of reading per patron. We'll track our progress as a community with a big poster in the entryway so everyone can see how we're all doing. We're so excited to see how much our patrons can earn to help our community," she said.
