The Montana Department of Transportation recently placed variable message signs on Interstate 90 east and west of the U.S. 287 Three Forks Interchange.
According to MDT Public Information Officer Charity Burns, the new signs are part of the ongoing I-90 Incident Management Project.
"This project will install 17 new variable message signs and outfit ten interchanges with road closure gates. These signs will aid motorists by communicating road conditions, crash information, or other important information about the roadway ahead," Burns said.
In March 2022, MDT announced a proposal to provide roadside safety enhancements on about 182 miles of I-90 between just west of the Three Forks Interchange and extending east for 182 miles ending near Lockwood.
According to the MDT, the project aims to reduce the number and severity of crashes and improve emergency response and management for crashes, closures, and other incidents along the I-90 corridor between Three Forks and Billings.
