Three Forks High School adds flag football program

Three Forks High School has added a new fall sports program.

After officially starting practice on August 22, the Wolves Girls’ Flag Football team will open its season on August 31 with a Jamboree at Hamilton High School.

Three Forks Athletic Director Terry Hauser, who will also serve as an assistant coach, said he first got the idea of adding the program at last January’s MHSA Meetings and decided to add the sport in the spring.

According to Hauser, the program will be funded entirely from 2024-26 by the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation.

“Blank is the owner of the Atlanta Falcons and has a place in Montana, so he is invested into getting girls’ flag football out here, so it is all paid for the first three years. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without their contribution, especially with the levy failing this last spring. It has really blown up in the South, and he has aspirations of it happening up here, too. I think it’s going to be really cool,” said Hauser. “I like the idea that it could really create a bond and something that a father and daughter could have the same interest in. Hopefully, all our players are sitting on the couch with their dad watching football this fall.”

With the season set to start this week, Hauser announced last week he will be hiring Maree Hansen as the head coach. Hauser said Hansen would be a great addition to the team, adding that she has coached her kids in flag football for the past four years and was recently hired as an assistant clerk for the school district.

While the team has 18 players who have joined, Hauser said most are also in cross country and volleyball.

“So not all of them will make every game and practice, but that’s ok, we just look at it as kind of a club sport. Don’t get that confused, though; we are still going to be competitive, and we want to win,” Hauser said.

The team will practice Tuesday and Thursday mornings and most Fridays. Three Forks will host a Jamboree on September 7 and wrap up the regular season with a September 14 at Jefferson High School in Boulder. Divisionals are scheduled for September 21 at East Helena, and State will take place on September 26 and 27 at Bobcat Stadium in Bozeman.

Hauser added they will play 40-minute games with 10-minute quarters.
