Candidate forum next week

The Gallatin County Bar Association and Montana State University Pre-Law Club are hosting a candidate forum/debate next week.

The event, scheduled for Thursday, September 26, at 6:30 p.m. at Gaines Hall on the MSU Campus in Bozeman, will feature the candidates running for Justice (Seat 3) and Chief Justice on the Montana Supreme Court.

Broadwater County Attorney Cory Swanson is running against former Federal Magistrate Judge Jerry Lynch in the nonpartisan race for chief justice.

The winner will replace current Chief Justice Mike McGrath, who is retiring at the end of his term.

In the nonpartisan race for Seat 3 Justice on the Montana State Supreme Court, Katherine M. Bidegaray, a State District Court Judge in Eastern Montana, is running against Flathead County State District Court Judge Dan Wilson. The winner of the race will replace current Justice Dick Sandefur, who is retiring at the end of his term.

“With the federal elections, it seems like these two races for the Montana Supreme Court have not gotten a lot of media attention. However, these positions are for eight-year terms and have the potential to strongly influence Montana law for the foreseeable future,” said Gallatin County Bar Association member and Assistant Bozeman City Attorney Bjorn Boyer.
