Letter: Swenson seeks spot on Broadwater County Commission

My name is Jesse Swenson, and I am running for Broadwater County Commissioner for District 3.

I am a fifth generation Montanan whose family homesteaded in the Dutton area. We moved to Townsend in 1995 when I was 8 years old. With the exception of going to college in Kalispell, where I earned my AAS in Land Surveying, and a brief time living in Helena where I was the Assistant Golf Professional for Green Meadow Country Club, Townsend is and always will be my home! I met my wife, LaReissa Swenson, while in high school here at BHS, we have 2 children, and we can’t imagine a better place to raise our kids than right here in Broadwater County!

My grandparents, Don and Jenny Schauber, started Schauber Surveying, a land surveying company in Townsend in 1995. My parents, Dan and Bernadette Swenson, bought that business in 2008 where I was employed from 2000-2010 and again from 2016 to today.

I have worked hard to help keep Broadwater County a great place to live and donated many hours of my time and services to various local boards and organizations. I have served on the Board of Directors of for Old Baldy Recreation Association (Old Baldy Golf Course) since 2017 and as President of the Board since 2019. I coached Junior High Golf from 2017-2023 and the Assistant Coach of the High School golf team in 2024. I have been volunteering at our local Duck’s Unlimited for over 20 years and have served as the Area Chairman for our local chapter since 2017. I have served on my church’s Pastoral Council since 2019 and have been teaching Religious Education at our church since 2017.

My reason for running for County Commissioner is simple, to be a levelheaded voice for the residents of Broadwater County. I truly love our county and our community, and I want to see it prosper! Broadwater County has seen a lot of growth over the past few years, and while I understand that this growth is unavoidable, I also want to make sure that we remain the community that we all know and love. I am a firm believer that we, as landowners, have property rights, and I believe there is a way to balance these rights and freedoms while maintaining the core identity of our county amidst the inevitable growth that we are experiencing.

Albert Einstein said, “Setting an example is not the main means of influencing others, it is the only means.” It was this quote that I couldn’t get out of my mind when I was discerning whether to run for Commissioner. Ultimately my family and I decided that rather than sitting and wishing for change, it was time to step up and be a part of that change! I truly want what is best for our County and I believe that I can help lead our county into the future while retaining the values and principles that have made our community such an amazing place to live!

If elected, I will do my best to be a voice of reason for the residents of our county. I understand that it is impossible to make everyone happy, and at times there will be extremely difficult decisions to be made, but I promise to listen with an open mind, not only to the professionals and experts of the topic at hand, but also to the public that I represent.

I would greatly appreciate your vote in the upcoming election! Thank you for your consideration.
