It was quite a start to the postseason for the Three Forks High School Speech and Drama team.
Competing at last Saturday's Divisional Tournament in Manhattan, Three Forks had all 15 students finish in the top eight and qualify for the State Tournament scheduled for January 31 and February 1 in Billings. The fantastic day of competition also included a third-place team finish in the Drama Sweepstakes.
Finishing in second place for Three Forks were Lance Demaray in Spontaneous Oral Interpretation and the duo of Amanda Wilcox and Brooke Crowe in Humorous Theater.
Max Brown-Beard was third in Program Oral Interpretation, Danni Kober was fourth in DOI, and Taeyana Gesker and Zaida Bertrand placed fifth in Humorous Theater.
Abby Diaz and CJ Duvall were sixth in Humorous Theater, and Aubrey Duvall placed seventh in Mime.
Zoey Dabling, Zane Pauzauskie, Taylor Teske, and Layna Vanderby finished seventh in Class Theater, and Skyler McBride was eighth in Humorous Solo.
COACHES VIEW ON DIVISIONALS/STATE
By Bronwyn Evans
Three Forks Speech and Drama Coach
We had a great Divisional Meet. All the students have worked so hard, and we have been having great success all season, but I was hoping but not expecting everyone to qualify and I could not be more thrilled.
Every single entry had a top four round during the meet, and we had multiple first place rounds as well. I was very happy to assist Julie and Becky Frank throughout the meet as well. Speech, Drama and Debate has such a unique atmosphere of camaraderie and support both between competitors and coaches, it's one of my favorite parts of this sport.
Seniors Lance Demaray, Taeyana Gesker and CJ Duvall are all returning to State and senior Abby Diaz is also excited to be competing this year. I will really miss this group of seniors; they have been so supportive to me these first two years of coaching and have been great examples to the underclassmen.
We have four freshmen on the team this year, Zoe Dabling, Zane Pauzauskie, Taylor Teske, and Layna Vanderby, and they have continued to improve and grow every week. Max Brown-Beard is a new student this year and he fell right into place and was excited to tackle a brand-new event this season. Aubrey Duvall, Amanda Wilcox and Skyler McBride were all new to competition this year and I have enjoyed getting to know them and seeing their successes.
And my returning students Zaida Bertrand, Brooke Crowe and Danni Kober took the season by storm helping with the new students and improving each meet.
Sydney Houska returned for a third season of coaching and has always been a sounding board for both the students and myself. She brings a critical eye and attention to detail that really helps competitors reach the next level in their performances. Coach Joseph Barrett is new to both the school and the team this year and we all got along immediately. He is positive, energetic and knowledgeable and the competitors really latched on to his coaching abilities right away. It's been a very fun year for all team members.
We won multiple team sweeps over the course of the season and were able to travel to a few Northern Division meets, which I think will give us an edge going into State. I have very high hopes for the State Tournament and look forward to continuing to grow the team and build on our successes this season.
